When she returned to Anglesea Street, Katie held her news conference about the explosion at the School of Pharmacy. It was twenty minutes later than scheduled, and the assembled reporters were growing restless, but it was just in time for RTÉ’s Six One News. She was accompanied by Superintendent Pearse and Mathew McElvey.

Dan Keane and Douglas Kelly both asked her if she was any closer to identifying the bomber. She could tell that they suspected her of knowing more than she was giving out, which of course she did. Operationally, though, it was far too early to give them any information about the telltale signatures that might link the device with the three bombs discovered up North; and she made no mention of James MacGreevy.

All she did was release the names of the eleven dead students and give an update on the condition of the three who had been seriously hurt. They remained in intensive care, but were expected to survive, although two of them had life-changing injuries. One had lost both of her forearms below the elbows and the other had suffered catastrophic brain damage.

‘But you still have no inkling of who might be responsible?’ called out Owen Dineen. ‘You can’t even hazard a guess?’

‘Like I told you earlier, Mr Dineen, we can’t arrest a guess.’

‘Oh, sure like. I forgot. It’s the “irrefutable proof” you’re after. You’re sure it’s not the eighty proof?’

‘What exactly do you mean by that?’

‘Nothing at all, Detective Superintendent. Well – let’s say nothing at all and something. Nothing that we haven’t been suspecting for quite a long time, and something that a little bird told us.’

‘Come on, then, out with it, whatever it is.’

‘I’m not in a position to say more for the moment, ma’am. But it’ll all become clear in the fullness of time.’

‘Right, then. I’m up the walls right now, as you can probably imagine, so I can’t be bothered with riddles. But before you go, I do have one more important announcement to make. We’ve detained a young female on suspicion of being the Lee Pusher.’

‘The Lee Pusher is a woman?’ asked Fionnuala Sweeney.

‘That’s correct. We’ll be releasing her name and any further details once she’s been interviewed and formally charged. She was arrested after that incident by South Gate Bridge this afternoon when a young woman was pushed into the river and subsequently rescued by a Garda detective sergeant.’

‘So that young woman didn’t fall in accidentally? She was pushed?’ said Dan Keane. ‘That puts an entirely different complexion on the story altogether. It looks like we all have some major rewriting to do. Were there any witnesses?’

‘There were several passers-by in the vicinity. But it happened so quickly that nobody saw the suspect push the young woman into the water except for Detective Sergeant Ní Nuallán who saved her – not even her partner, Detective Cushley. As you know, that’s been one of the defining characteristics of all the Lee Pusher’s attacks. They’ve all been totally unexpected and carried out so quick that nobody’s ever sure of what they saw.
