“Mac and cheese, as promised.” Carl was at my front door at 10am the next day, as promised, dressed in overalls covered in brick dust and mud.

He handed me six containers with a grin.

“You’re too good to me,” I smiled. “Thanks.”

“And Alicia’s cake,” he said, pulling a round tin from a backpack.

“Tell her thanks too,” I said. “Do you want to come in for a cuppa before I go off to work?”

“I really can’t stop,” he said. “But I want to hear about your date with the cauliflower man.”

“It wasn’t great,” I said, leaning against the frame of the front door with a sigh. “We weren’t really compatible, but… he also had an issue when I mentioned you.”

“Me?” He chuckled awkwardly. “Really?”

“Yeah,” I shrugged. “It seems being friends with your ex-husband is a bit weird to some people. Does… does Alicia have a problem with it?”

“Oh, gosh, no,” Carl said firmly. “She gets it. We’re just friends. Friends who never should have gotten married in the first place.”

“Exactly,” I said with a firm nod. “But I can see why other people might not see it like that.”

“Yeah, I get that,” he said, zipping his backpack back up and slinging it over one shoulder. “And I know this is very lame advice from someone who is happily married, but when the right person comes along, they’ll just understand. That’s how it goes.”

“You’re right, that is very lame coming from a happily married guy. You obviously forget what being single was like,” I scoffed.

He smirked sympathetically and started to turn to leave.

“I remember,” he said. “But you just have to trust the process. You’ll find the right person. You had one bad date, so what? Shake it off.”

“Shake it off,” I repeated back to him in a mocking voice.

“Yeah,” he said with a stupidly big smile. “Good luck with your town meeting tonight, Sian. Give ‘em hell. You deserve that land more than anyone.”

And with that, he trod back up the garden path to his work van, giving a simple wave as he went.

I paused there, holding the food and digesting what he’d said.

Why did all my friends say things like that – ‘when the right person comes along it’ll just work out’. Didn’t they know how annoying it was?

It dawned on me as I watched Carl drive away just how long I had been single. Just how long it had been since I’d felt that ‘it’ll just work out’ feeling.

Nearly eleven years. Sure, there had been a few relationships mixed in, but never anything permanent. No one who I’d imagined building a life with.

I put the food away and got ready for work, with a suddenly strong desire to message the estate agent Gemma had been bugging me about.

His profile wasn’t anything special, but at least he didn’t seem as weird as the cauliflower man.
