CHAPTER 22
Tameka headed into the office with a smile on her face. She had found a way to put her negative feelings about Brook’s engagement behind her. She glanced at her ring as she maneuvered her way through the building and couldn’t help but be happy with the fact that she was loved by a good man. The only thing that could make it better would be if Wayne earned a higher salary. But she would worry about lighting a fire under his career and ambitions later. Right now she would just enjoy her day and the idea of planning a wedding. Then her thoughts were cut short as she was greeted by that annoying Monica.
“Good morning, Tameka. You look mighty happy today. Is there a reason”
“Hi, Monica, I didn’t realize that I needed a reason to be happy.”
“I guess I’m just not used to seeing you so chipper in the mornings.”
“Well, my dear Monica, there is a first time for everything.”
“Yes, there is a first time, but now I think I know why you’re so happy. Is that an engagement ring on your finger?”
“You caught me, Monica, can’t get a thing past you.”
Without warning Monica let out a big squeal and grabbed Tameka up into a bear hug. Of course this attracted damn near everyone’s attention and people started to gather around asking what was going on. Monica made an announcement about the engagement as if she were the one getting married. Once the news room was all a buzz and everyone was gathered around, Monica had to throw a little hate Tameka’s way.
“Hold your hand up higher, Tameka and let everyone see your precious little diamond. Isn’t it a great starter ring everyone? It’s just precious.”
Tameka snatched her hand out of the air and it was apparent to everyone that she was pissed. How dare this little witch try and demean her and cut down her ring in front of everyone. And just when Tameka had decided to let her slide and not knock her out of the anchor chair. Well know the witch would pay. Monica had no idea how much this little stunt was going to cost her. As Tameka started to walk away she heard Monica call out behind her.
“Don’t forget that we are doing lunch with Mr. Thomas today, Tameka.”
Mr. Thomas was the station manager and he often got together with the anchors and producers to make sure that everything was going okay. Mr. Thomas prided himself on having happy, satisfied employees that weren’t looking to go anywhere. Today he would have to decide whether to fire someone and their desire to stay or leave would not play into his decision at all.
Tameka threw herself into her work and made sure that Mr. Thomas and everyone else saw how well she performed. The noon day broadcast was flawless and while the audience would give all the credit to the anchor, folks that actually worked in the business knew how much credit went to the producer.
