My love,

Sometimes I pick up broadcasts from Radio Berlin. I keep the sound down low and close all the windows and listening to it makes me think of you. Not just in terms of where you are now, but also it takes me back to that first summer together, when we met at the Free German Youth camp. Remember? I would sneak into your tent and we would listen to the rain tapping on the fabric. One day you dared me to steal the battery radio from our camp leader. My heart pounding I raced back with it under an arm to your tent, my plimsolls squelching in the mud, imagining how you were going to reward me. You pulled me underneath your blanket and we turned the radio on. Spinning the dial we searched for sounds from the West and listened intently to the crackle and fizz of the airwaves between official stations. Many of the broadcasts we happened upon were jammed by the big Soviet jamming towers, and all we mostly got was our own boring broadcasts and the ‘beep beep’ of beacons that we imagined to be Soviet satellites spinning though space. You slowly turned the dial and occasionally a voice came through the speakers, accompanied by alien music and we would whisper excitedly trying to make out what it was behind the hiss and sputter of the jammers. It sounded so far away. To us it was the sound of another planet.
