Secrets

Destiny and Leslie came over around 4 o’clock. “Hey guys!” I was excited to see them. “Yo!” they both said. “So you two are finally out of the hospital, huh!” “Yep. We’re as good as can be.” Leslie said. “Hmm” Destiny said sliding into the kitchen, “How are things going around here with you? Anything new perhaps?” I didn’t say anything. In fact, I was speechless. What was there to say? Frankly, it was quite difficult to explain every detail to them. While I was deep in thought Destiny tried getting my attention by calling out my name. “Vanessa?” Destiny’s lightly shaded brown eyebrows raised while her head titled a little over towards the left.

I left Destiny and Leslie hanging in the kitchen. Meanwhile I went upstairs to get the knife, without a word of reply. It was so cold in my room and not only because it was winter, but because of something peculiar. My room was a freezer. The chills ran down my back as I walked further into the room. The knife was just laying there with the dry blood on it. I wrinkled my nose at the sight of it. I walked up to the knife and there was a tiny note attached to it. “Have fun tonight…” What’s this all about? And why does it appear to be a different color each time I get a note? This time the color is white crayon but on a black piece of paper. I surely do not like notes at all. They are nothing but issues to me.

I took the knife and note down the stairs with me. As I was walking down, I heard Leslie and Destiny talking in a low tone. Instantly I stopped walking to listen to their conversation. “No we can’t tell her.” “But why can we not? Vanessa is my best friend and your cousin? It just wouldn’t be right.” “It doesn’t matter, do you know how much danger we will be in if we tell her!? We got to just keep our cool and look unsuspicious.” Leslie sounded a little bit tense and not as much of the worried part. “Yeah, I know how much danger we’ll be in, but c’mon Leslie I don’t know how much longer I can keep this secret from Vanessa. I can try and not appear to look like I’m being devious but I just don’t know if can pull that off.” Destiny sounded like she wanted to burst out into tears. “Hah, what are you talking about we just saw Vanessa today? You can totally pull it off, but whatever you do, do not end up jumpy.” “Eh, I’ll try not to and yeah that’s true. I did only see her today.” Destiny and Leslie giggled a little bit and then stopped. “When she comes, follow my lead.” Leslie directed to Destiny.

‘Follow my lead?’ What does she mean by this? “Hum.” I said coming down the stairs to let them know I was soon to be entering the kitchen where they were.
