After a long time, I feel the breath of fresh air in the province. We had broken the news to everyone. All those who hated Betin like I did, and whose allegiance shifted to Po automatically. There are a few I am in doubt of, but Po assured us that he can ascertain who’s faking and who’s not. He had, however, asked me to not disclose that nugget of information to anybody.

“Do you think Po would be able to tell?” Rube asks me as we make our way to the Province Hall that is based on the main floor of Betin’s palace. The same one that Shakti and Po refused to enter.

“He will,” I assure him. “How’s Marisa doing?” I enquire after his younger sister.

“She’s better,” he smiles. “I think, the day Po stepped foot in the province, she started getting colour back in her cheeks, and the fear of darkness started receding.”

Tears sting my eyes. Marisa had witnessed her mother being subjected to vile things at the hands of Betin’s and Brahakta’s teams. Because she dared announce that she’s leaving the province. Marisa has been dealing with trauma ever since. So is their mother. Poor woman has not spoken a word since that day three years ago.

“I hope this means a change for the better,” Zilta says as she joins us.

“It will be,” Aarav says from the other side of her. “You didn’t hug Fearless Shakti yesterday. That is what being loved by your god feels like, Zilli. Trust me.”

“I want to meet Po’s family so bad,” I tell them. “If they really are like Po and Shakti talk about them, then I cannot wait to meet them.”

“You really think they’d accept us? We are so damaged,”’ Aarav speaks in his soft voice.

“I don't want to hear such bullshit from you ever again.”

We halt, and slowly turn around. Standing behind us are Mara, Deer, Po, and Shakti. Shakti, being the one who said it, glares at us with anger.

We cower at the force of her anger and lower our chins, trembles starting to break over my body.

Damn it. No matter how much I tell myself that I am brave, muscle and mind programming always beats me.

“Eyes up!”

We startle and look up to find Paramaiah looking at us with anger too.

Aarav and Rube whimper.

Paramaiah comes to stand in front of us, drawing a crowd of spectators around. Flashbacks assault me. Public humiliations, running to save myself, running to protect my brother. So much. So, so much anger and pain. My knees lock, preparing themselves for taking off.

“Eyes always up,” Paramaiah tells us. “Cael’s family isn't weak hearted and weak willed.”

My breath stutters. What?

Shakti, seeing our faces, steps towards us. When she really looks in our eyes, her face softens and tears fill her eyes.

“Who inflicted so much pain on you?” She whispers. “Listen to me. You all are like my own children. And one thing I never entertained with Ada and Caellum was them beating themselves, or being victimised. I understand your times have been tough.
