Chapter Twenty

The golden curl bounced as I tugged it and let it go.

A pair of pale blue eyes stared back at me, the girl glaring with such force I thought she might kill me. She pursed her little lips and crossed her arms.

I burst out laughing, covering my face. “Sorrrrryyyyy.”

“I’m telling my daddy on you.” She pouted, speaking in the cutest little voice; it nearly made my heart crack.

“Alex, I thought we were friends!” I held my heart as though she’d smashed it.

She rose from her tiny chair, and I swear to Christ, she looked down her nose at me, just like her mother did. “Daddy says I no have to worry about boys’ hearts because he will break dem’ for me.”

I laughed again, this one full-bellied, and Juan came into view, grinning from ear to ear.

“That’s right, baby girl.” He swung down and picked her up, kissing her head while he sank into the couch cushions.

The house was cozy, smaller than their last one, but nice. The interior was completely them, every small touch and piece something they’d picked or designed together, and that was something I greatly admired.

“So, you gonna tell me why you’re here, sulking like a dog who’s been kicked?”

I looked up from my spot on the floor where I’d been trying to sneak up on Alex while she hosted a tea party for three massive teddy bears.

“I’m being forced to go to college, and it feels like I’m pretending to be a fuck boy in high school…how would you react?”

Juan laughed, not bothering to cover his daughter’s ears. She’d likely seen and heard much worse. Although, if Taylor were down, she might have an issue with her being in the same room as the two of us. She usually did, but only because we had the tendency to bring out the worst in each other.

“I’d probably stop.” Juan typed in the passcode for the tablet Alex held up to him.

I smirked, eyeing his three-year-old in her little white dress and zebra print tights. Girl was crazy funny, and a miniature version of Taylor, super cute.

“Last week, she knew the code…what happened?”

Juan cut a glare toward me and shook his head. “Did you fucking teach her?”

I shook my head, stifling a laugh.

“Well, someone did. She keeps learning whatever code we pick, and then I have to change it.”

“She’s smart—that’s not a bad trait to have for a daughter who’s going to inherit all this shit.”

Alex crawled off her father’s lap, and her tiny feet carried her to the massive corner decked out in princess décor, complete with a castle and a hammock stuffed with pillows.

“You honestly think Taylor would ever allow that?”

“She’d prefer the twins take it?” That didn’t seem right either.

My friend ran his hand through his hair, his gold wedding band gleaming under the lights as he let out a sigh and checked the monitor that showed his wife rocking one of the twins in the nursery. I knew better than to show I was looking for too long.
