Chapter Ten

Joe

Eventually, down a grubby city center backstreet, I see the sign further down for MFM Instruments. From here it sure doesn’t look like the advertised ‘Cities biggest musical instrument outlet’. But I guess looks can be deceptive.

“Any loose change boss?” a voice says and a gaunt guy slumped on his ass in the doorway of a boarded-up hardware store holds a hand out from inside the soiled blanket around him.

Junkie.

I look all around me and stop. Dig a note from my pocket and let it flutter down into his hand.

“You’re star boss.”

I wish. I nod and continue to MFM. ‘Mother Fucking Music’ as I told Rachel when I left her at the exhibition center. She looked at me like she didn’t believe me.

I pull open a heavy steel door. A blast of warm air pours into my face.

Shit man. It’s as big as an aircraft hanger in here.

Staccato, mid-range notes ring out on an electric guitar and a snare drum rattles somewhere. I gaze in wonder beyond the displays of effect pedals, guitar straps, and songbooks and over to the far wall. Row upon row of Gibson, Fender, PRS, Ibanez, Schecter, and even Burns guitars. A guy could spend all day here. I check the time on my phone. I’ve got around three hours less travel before I have to make my way back across the city to the Exhibition Center. To where Rachel is working for Phil’s promo company. Displaying food products to overseas businesspeople. Men mainly, I bet.

But let’s get to this.

I spend the afternoon blissfully testing out mainly US-made Fenders (including a couple of custom shop jobs) but also check out the stores’ range of Vox amps. The beauty with places like this is that none of the staff hassle you to buy. Don’t put time pressure on you for how long you spend with the gear. Eddie was green with envy when I told him I was coming here.

It’s not until later when I’m in the cab on the way back across the city that I brood about Rachel and tonight.

She wasn’t certain, but she said it’s likely she might get asked to escort a client to dinner. My chest tightens. She’s only done it once before. And I wasn’t with her that time. If it happens tonight though, and she brings them back to the hotel, I want to somehow get to watch her.

My cock twitches in my pants.

“Doing anything special tonight fella?” the Asian driver adjusts his rearview mirror.

“Picking the Mrs up from the exhibition center then back to the hotel. Out for something to eat later,” I say as if the plan is settled.

“She been there spending your money for you today?”

“No. She’s working a trade show. Food industry.”

“Sounds grand.”

“I’m not so sure about that,” I say. He’s got that sleazy look of a darker Dennis Talbot about him. Thin gray hair and sly eyes behind his glasses.

The thought reminds me of that prick’s latest demand. But now, a hundred safe miles
