Chapter Ten
I sat down across from Sam and let the crystals tumble from my hands.
Sam glanced at his watch, and then swiftly began arranging the rocks. âTen seconds,â he murmured as he worked. I saw that heâd set out one of my stainless-steel camping bowls, and heâd poured water into it. He also had my saltshaker by his hand.
âThree... two... one...â He reached for the saltshaker. Then he stood and walked around our little area, shaking out the salt as he went.
As he walked, he chanted something in low tones, in a language I didnât understand. Then he said, âThe circle has been cast, And so it is.â Next, he sat down within the circle. I was in it, too, and so were the neatly arranged rocks.
âAnd so it is,â I murmured.
Sam reached for my hands. âReady to join energy?â
Wow. A guy had never asked me that before. Justin had been my first serious boyfriend. He was interested in the paranormal, but he was still a student, like me. As Sam spoke, I sensed how comfortable he was with magic.
âMmm hmm...â I said, sort of dreamily. It just felt so intimate. I had butterflies in my stomach.
âThis magic is completely safe,â Sam assured me, as he reached his hands, palms up. âTrust me. You donât need to be nervous.â
I trusted him. I placed my hands on his. I saw him close his eyes, so I did the same.
As I closed my eyes, my inner world came alive. I sensed my emotions, in high definition. I could also feel my heart beating in my chest, and the cool night air, filling my lungs each time I breathed.
It was as if Iâd been only half aware of all of this while my eyes were open, thanks to the fact that the outer world took up so much of my focus. But with my eyes closed, the things Iâd been taking for granted now moved to the forefront of my awareness.
At the center of it all was the feel of Samâs hands. They were strong, steady, and warm. A buzzing, almost electric energy emanated from the center of his palm and poured into mine. I recalled the way the beam of light had shot out of him, up in the tunnel. Then I thought of the green lightning bolts. Sam was a powerful wizard; that was becoming more and more clear.
I felt my breathing slow down, my heartbeat become steadier. I sensed that this was because I was joining forces with Sam. We had work to do, together, and that united purpose seemed to merge our energy fields into one. I felt suddenly more confident.
âGhost of Leo Gibson,â Sam said in a low, deep, gentle voice. âWe summon you forth. Join us now. We wish you no harm. Come forth now.â
We waited in silence. The soft sound of a breeze rattling the dried aspen leaves met my ears, and I could hear Sam breathing softly. I also noted the faintest ripple of the brook water trickling over rocks, but nothing else.
