CHAPTER 6

THE INSIDE OF the house was like a refrigerator in terms of temperature. Every corner of every room was blanketed in a thick veil of cobwebs. James shuddered at the thought of spiders scuttling towards him with their long, spindly legs. The living room was incredibly large, with an atmosphere that was heavy and filled with the strong smell of leather from the two-seater couch, and the faint scent of dust.

‘So this was your parents’ house? It’s nice. Apart from the cobwebs, but then I just hate spiders.’ He trembled at the thought of the creepy crawlies.

‘Your one of those guys, frightened of something so small. Come on.’ Michael laughed.

‘What? They are horrible little things. Some can also kill you. I just can’t stand them.’

The older man couldn't help but smirk at the timidness of the younger generation. They are fragile people. He let out a hearty laugh to himself, understanding that everyone had different upbringings. His father had instilled in him the courage to face his fears and to stay strong, no matter how much he wanted to cry. He felt so guilty for shedding tears over his dog Bella that he thought he had let his father down. His father bent down to him, and his strong arms enveloped him in a comforting embrace. He cupped his hand around his shoulder and whispered that it was alright to express his emotions. Even a brave man can feel a rush of emotion when something unexpected occurs. During his upbringing, he had to face his fears and learn to cope with them, shaping him into the man he eventually became.

‘Maybe face your fear of spiders. Squash any you see. Don’t worry, I know that’s easier said that done. But trust me, if you can conquer your fear of spiders. You will get through anything.’ Michael said.

The first lesson was clear: face your fears before facing an enemy. Fear is like a frozen statue, incapable of defending itself. A person can use their fists to defend themselves. He looked around at the cobwebs decorating the house. Checking which one had a spider or two on it. He located a big one, a little one, nearby.

‘Target located.’

James looked at him, petrified. With a single shake of his head, he pivoted to see what Michael had discovered. The eight legged creature was enormous, its size rivaling that of a tarantula. It wasn’t, really. But that was how he saw it.

‘Erm, do you want me to die? That thing is massive!’ He screamed.

‘Face your fear. Trust me.’

But the young man couldn't bring himself to approach the arachnids, despite his trembling heart. Watching it move with its many legs, freaked him out. His skin crawled as he contemplated approaching that cursed thing. Not only was he scared of spiders, he experienced a deep-seated terror when faced with them. His friend tried to help him through it, but sadly, it didn't make a difference. He went limp as his friend edged the spider towards him, its small body shimmering in the light.
