Chapter Twelve

“I’ve done something, Annie!”

She lifted her gaze from her screen to see Siobhán standing in the doorway. “Done something?” That would sound ominous, if not for the bright smile Siobhán wore and the happiness in her voice.

Siobhán waved the plastic bag in her hand. Something inside it rattled. “I went to the art supplies shop in Dún Laoghaire while Da was at his rehab appointment.”

“Yeah?” Annie turned to face her, smiling.

“I bought a few paints and brushes. I had some canvases here already, so I’ll use those before I buy any more. The woman in the shop was so lovely. We talked art for ages. She’s a painter too. She’s been showing in a gallery in Dublin for over fifty years! She showed me some examples of her work, and the pieces are just stunning.”

Annie’s smile turned into a grin as Siobhán launched into a description of the paintings. Some of it went right over Annie’s head, but she loved hearing Siobhán be so enthusiastic about something—especially art—again.

“I wound up being late to pick Da up. I expected him to take my head off, but he was quite calm about it once I told him where I’d been.”

“That’s because we both know how much you’ve missed your art,” Annie said softly. “I know I love seeing you so excited an enthusiastic about it. I’m sure he does too.”

Siobhán set the bag on the couch, then wrapped her arms around Annie’s waist, pulling their bodies flush. “I’m feeling rather enthusiastic. You might even say inspired.”

“I’m thrilled to hear it. When are you going to get started?”

“Now, if you’ll have me?”

“If I’ll have you?” Annie gave her a quizzical look. “What do you mean?”

“Would you share your workspace with me?” Siobhán waved a hand to indicate the room they were in.

Annie laughed. “You shared your mother’s favorite room with me, so yes, I think I can make some space for you in it.”

Siobhán looked around, frowning. “We may have to re-arrange some things. I’d like to be in front of that window, if you don’t mind.”

“Not at all.”

They had to shift the table Annie worked at to one side and bring another that had been next to the sofa near the window for Siobhán to lay her paints on. But once the wooden easel from Siobhán’s childhood bedroom had been moved in, the room seemed right. It was a little cramped, sure, but it felt good to have Siobhán working a few feet away.

It felt like being home again.

“Just a bit of green here,” Siobhán muttered under her breath as she leaned into the canvas. When she straightened, she brushed her hair off her forehead with the back of her arm.

Annie couldn’t see what Siobhán was working on at the moment, but whatever it was, she seemed to be making great progress. Annie hadn’t been having as much luck with her post about Bray as she’d hoped. She couldn’t seem to get the words quite right.

She sat back, debating if she should take a short break for tea.
