As it turned out, it was the teacher who gave Roberto a handkerchief, a brand-new blue handkerchief with a darker blue border. She slipped it across his desk and whispered something I couldn’t hear. I don’t think anybody else even saw.

“Thank goodness!” I told Mami that evening. “Now he won’t have snail tracks up and down his sleeve.”

“You could follow your teacher’s example and be kinder to Roberto,” she said. “You might make a friend.”

“But he’s a boy!”

“So was Martin.”

“Roberto is nothing like Martin. How can you even think we might be friends?”

“What I think is that you need to understand that every friend you make will be different. If you expect them all to be like Martin, you won’t ever have a new one.”

I opened my mouth to argue, but no words came out. What could I say anyway?
