whatever destination before sunrise. Something told me our “hosts” didn’t give

two shits if we did or not.

All the way, Levi and Selena stayed close to me. He was slightly to my left

and behind me. She was ahead and to the right. She threw wary glances at the

other wolves, and Levi may have done the same. The fact that they felt the need

to protect me from their own kind was not reassuring in the least.

My feet had long since gone numb and every muscle in my body ached

when we reached our apparent destination. A long driveway sliced through the

forest, connecting their world to the rest of the world. Half-frozen gravel

crunched beneath boots and paws, and the driveway spilled us out into the heart

of what was, evidently, home.

Most wolves lived on secluded compounds, though I couldn’t say if this one

was typical of those throughout the clans. A cluster of small houses surrounded

a larger, ornate building that I assumed was their temple. We were led to one of

the houses off to the side of the cluster, and a couple of the wolves who’d

brought us here trotted out of sight. One of those remaining snarled at us and

barked a few times.

“Get on your knees,” Selena said, slowly lowering herself onto her own

knees.

Levi did the same. I wasn’t so sure about kneeling to almost eye level with

one of these animals, but I was even less sure about arguing with them, so I knelt

between Selena and Levi in the snow. I tried to concentrate on the liquid cold

invading my knees through my jeans, on that ache as melted snow made its way

to my skin. At least that was a more pleasant thing to think about than the pair of wolves pacing in front of us. Or the other wolves surrounding us. Or those

watching from windows and porches.
