MATT struggled against Dr. Owens’s viselike grip. He kicked at the man’s legs and clawed at his skin, hoping the assault would buy his freedom. Nothing he did, not jabbing his elbow in his sternum nor clawing at his eyes, caused the death grip to loosen.
Instead, the man unleashed a hideously insane laugh that sounded more like the braying of a jackass, and his breath burned the back of Matt’s neck. It reminded him of when he sat too close to the fireplace in winter. The waves of heat gnawing on his skin caused his flesh to blister. The pain became unbearable, and just when Matt thought his flesh would bubble in response to the heat, Dr. Owens flung him into the chair he had previously occupied.
Both he and the chair toppled over.
The force of the collision knocked the air from his body, but still he struggled to his feet. He needed something, anything, to defend himself. On the doctor’s desk sat a letter opener. If he could reach it, he might be able to do some damage of his own.
He lunged for the desk, but before he could reach the weapon, Dr. Owens descended upon him again.
“Nice try,” Dr. Owens announced. He pressed his right hand against Matt’s neck, constricting his windpipe and slapping him across the face twice with his left. “But not good enough.” He pushed harder against Matt’s neck, and Matt gasped for air that would not come. “You will die, and you will suffer. For all the times you escaped death before this. For all the minions who died because of you, your death will be long and tortuous.”
Dr. Owens fell into another laughing fit, and while he trumpeted in victory, the man’s physical features began to change.
Coarse, black hair inexplicably grew on his head, spreading from the top down to his forehead before covering the entirety of his face. From the top of his head extended long hairy flaps covered in the same dark fur that coated his body. To Matt, they resembled horse ears, and as Matt watched his Mr. Bean eyebrows turned dark and merged with the new coat of ever-extending fur, while his eyes stretched further apart until they resided on both sides of a snout that bulged outward from where his mouth once resided.
As impossible as it might seem, Dr. Owens had grown a donkey’s head.
“What the hell?” Matt mumbled.
The thing that used to be Dr. Owens brayed. Its giant horse teeth snapped viciously together just inches from Matt’s face. “That’s correct,” it snuffed before dropping Matt to the floor.
Matt crawled away from the creature, pressing his back against the far wall. The sight of the monster paralyzed him with fear. He knew he had to get away. He had no time to be afraid, but the monstrosity that Dr. Owens had somehow become crippled his strength and his will.
Trembling was all he could manage.
“I do enjoy cowering mortals,” the creature announced while casually crossing the distance. “And I think I shall enjoy it much more if you saw me in my complete and true form.
