Chapter Twenty-Two
âWhat was the name you left for the reservation?â Sarah pushed her new brown hair over her right shoulder. The makeup applied in a hurry was overdone, but she could live with it for an hour or two. âWill that name stick?â
âOf course.â Disco eased to a stop on the side of the road, then killed the engine. âWhy wouldnât our reservation stick? I have a credit card in that name and a driverâs license.â
âI know. Iâm just pissed that we have to go under this disguise.â
He watched her for a long moment. âNot your style?â
âIf Iâm entering a building, I walk through the front door and deal with it. This isnât about my ego. Itâs about doing the right thing with your chin held high.â She stared out the windshield at nothing in particular. âIf wearing a disguiseâthis wig, these clothesâgets the job done, then so be it. Otherwise, pretending to be someone else just feels like a lie.â
âYouâve never worn a wig?â
She thought back to when she covered her hair with a bandanna, but that was different.
âIâve dyed my hair before if thatâs the same thing.â She glanced over at him. âI mean, to disguise myself. So thereâs that.â
âNothing wrong with being upfront when dealing with your enemy. But this time, those guys are too trained, and thereâs too many of them to walk in the front door, guns swinging.â
âYeah, and I donât want to do that either. Too many people would die senselessly, and we still have no idea what their intentions are except wanting to play a game by telling me my sister is still alive.â
Disco clucked his tongue. âThe way I see it is we would need cartel enforcers to take over the hotel if we werenât going in like this.â
Sarah nodded, then grabbed the door handle. âLetâs do this and find out what we can about them, then get back to Amanda and Brody.â
After exiting the Hummer, Sarah waited for Disco to come around to her, then she held onto his arm. Playing a couple, she had to be in the role all the way to the front of the hotel until they got into their room.
âWill those kids be okay with your hair guy?â
âOf course. Heâs ex-special forces, turned hairdresser. Iâve got the guys who missed Darwin at the airport on their way to relieve him. Nothing will happen to those kids.â
As they strode along the sidewalk on Front Street, her gut twisting at the knowledge that Darwin was missing now, too, no one paid them any extra attention. Near the front of the Royal Oak Hotel, in the pickup and drop-off area, the ambulances were gone now.
âWonder what happened earlier,â Sarah mumbled for Disco to hear.
âHope it has nothing to do with the people you know.â
âIf it does, screw this disguise. Iâm hurting someone.â
âJust try to stay calm as long as you can. We need to get in and get out, and in between, learn as much as we can without hurting anyone.
