Chapter 11

Full of Powers, But Powerless

* * *

Sam and Ethan scoured the musty room, looking for the device. The glass surroundings proved to make the dome building scary rather than cool. Anyone could be watching them go through the museum’s items. Where could it be? Sam coughed from the dust flying off the metal shelf she was searching. None of the labeled plaques matched a device for splitting powers. She was trying to stay positive, but one thought kept popping up in her head. What if Keith has it, since he knew we would come for it? She tried to push it out of her mind and continued looking.

“Did you check behind that wooden armoire?” Ethan pointed to the opposite corner of the room.

“Yeah, I checked everywhere.” Sam stretched her hands up and behind her head in frustration. “I think we need to start checking the rest of the castle.”

“Derek told us to stay here,” Ethan replied.

“Yeah, but what are they going to do? Distract Keith forever? We need to get this device.”

“Fine.” Ethan put the books he had moved back into place and picked up his stuff. “By the way, what exactly are we doing with your powers? Are we all getting some part of it?” He looked a bit excited about the idea as he rushed towards her.

“I don’t know. I’m keeping thought projection and mind reading though,” she teased him as they left the building. Ethan laughed and put his arm around Sam’s shoulder.

“As long as you’re safe after this, I don’t care about the powers,” he whispered in her ear. They were back out on the purple ground and could see half of the castle below them, while the rest was hidden below the fog layer. The peak of the mountain felt strangely isolated. Even though Sam knew the gates were a long way down, the fog created the illusion that they were on a small hill overlooking other planets. The air around them felt humid. The sky seemed to be getting darker at the peak too. “Is it night here? Or daytime?” Ethan looked puzzled.

“I have no idea,” Sam said, trying to look for the next building to search.

“Night, if you go by Earth time. Here the sky always looks like this,” a deep voice spoke behind Sam and Ethan. They turned around and froze as they saw Keith standing in front of them. So much for distracting him. Sam stepped closer to Ethan and took his hand in her own. Guys, Keith found us. She projected her thoughts to Derek, but she got too distracted by Keith’s words to listen in on her brother’s thoughts for a response. “Ah, how cute! You two were inseparable as children, too. I missed seeing both of you, so innocent and young.” He laughed.

“And you were nice when we were children,” Ethan yelled back. Sam’s stomach was doing flips. She could feel Ethan’s hand getting sweaty. Her heart wanted to jump out of her chest and run away.

“Okay, you know why we’re here,” Sam yelled.
