Jenna whooped as she watched her pink golf ball shoot over the drawbridge, through the doors of the miniature castle, and out the other side, finally diving into the seventeenth hole with a satisfying thunk.

“Another hole in one for me!” she squealed, rushing over to grab her ball, then taking a bow. “That’s my third one! First I ace my World Lit midterm, and now I’m sinking every other putt!” She beamed, feeling like this day couldn’t get much better. Her last midterm had ended at three this afternoon, and she walked out of it feeling almost certain of a good grade. In fact, she’d felt that way after all her midterms, especially her Culinary Arts practicum. But then again, cooking had never been anything but fun for her, so even making a spinach soufflé in under an hour was a breeze, and the look on Dr. Pierpont’s face when she’d tasted it was priceless—absolute bliss.

Last semester may have been a struggle, but this semester Jenna was back to her old self, acing exams and already at the top of two of her classes. Both the parades she’d had for the Marching Raiders were over and done with, and her Raiders Concert Band practices were cushy compared to the grueling parade routes, so she could coast through the rest of the semester, no problem. And now that the cramming for midterms was over, she could kick back and enjoy her Friday night out with Tiger, Roni, and Lance at the Putt-Putt Playland.

“I wish I had your luck,” Roni mumbled to her as she fished her ball out of the minimoat surrounding the castle. “My Business Math midterm was a nightmare, and so is my swing. And I’m playing with a polka-dotted two-foot club. How can I keep missing the ball with a baby club? This game should be a gimme.”

“Nothing in golf is ever a gimme, trust me,” Tiger said. “But Jenna’s unbelievable.” He laughed, shaking his head. “This is starting to get embarrassing.”

“I made peace with my embarrassment when I realized we were the oldest people here by about a decade,” Lance said, nodding to the scattered groups of kids playing golf around them. “And that the munchkins were leaving me in the dust.”

“But I’m supposed to be the golf pro here,” Tiger said.

“Not when it comes to miniature golf, you’re not,” Jenna singsonged, reveling in her victory. “Besides, the last time I played with you on a real course, I played a two-hundred-stroke game, and you played an eighty-six-stroke game. This is sweet, sweet revenge.”

“Face it, man.” Lance slapped Tiger amicably on the back. “Golf might be your game, but putt-putt isn’t.”

“I blame it all on the Jack and Coke I had before we came here,” Tiger said, leaning over to concentrate on his ball. He swung, and the ball ricocheted off the castle tower and shot toward the miniature jousting knights below. “Fore!” he yelled, just before the ball crashed into the knights. “Hmm, I think there might have been a few casualties that time.
