Chapter 16

Maze

We spend the day by the water, dipping our feet in occasionally as Ryder tells me more of the crazy adventures he's had. He tells me about how he once traveled to Colorado to a festival filled with amazing art and people. And how everyone would stay up all hours of the night, taking different hallucinogens and dancing until they collapsed.

I imagine the stories as he tells them. A slight feeling of envy takes over me as I start to picture myself being there, experiencing all of it with him. He tells me about how once he got pulled over in California and the cop was such an asshole that Dude bit him on the leg. They had to make a run for it, and he was so surprised that they actually got away.

I watch in awe as he tells me story after story. Part of me wants to ask what his life was like before he was a traveler, but I decide against it, because something tells me it would change the entire mood. I don't want to do anything that might cause that big smile of his to disappear.

Once the sun begins to set, we get back into the van and set out for Ryder's 'favorite lookout.' He's been talking about it nonstop since I've met him and ever since we got in the van his body is shaky and he’s grinning even more so than usual.

I can feel his excitement the closer we get to it, and am also becoming more anxious to see it.

We head up a winding desert road as we scale a large mountain. I stare out the window with anticipation, unsure of what I might see but excited regardless.

It's dark when Ryder finally pulls over to the side of the road in a nonexistent parking spot. I try to see past the darkness, but from what I can tell there is nothing for miles as I look out to the flat land below us.

"From here we have to walk," he says as he grabs a portable lamp from the back of the van.

He leads me up an inconspicuous trail, and my stomach swarms with a feeling I can't recognize. I try to keep my eyes on our feet where the light illuminates the ground.

We climb for a few minutes and I start to feel a bit light-headed by the excursion, but soon we finally arrive at the top.

Ryder turns off the lamp and I have to blink hard a few times to let my eyes re-adjust. "What do you think? Isn't it beautiful?" He waves his arms up to the dark heavens surrounding us. I can barely make out the outline of his body against the many twinkling lights.

The night sky is even grander from where we're standing than it was back at the campsite. It spreads out infinitely, hugging the earth below it.

I hold my breath as I take in the vast number of stars hanging above us. I almost have to force myself not to reach up in an attempt to touch them.
