On the long, silent drive back to my inn, Sam ground gears and hit potholes without braking or even swerving. Fortunately, we arrived at the front entrance without a scratch.

“I’d rather you kept your distance from my boy,” he said.

“Maybe you should tell him that, Sam. He’s the one who sent for me, remember?”

“Right, well, I’ll offer him your apologies.”

“Sam, he’s not a child anymore. Theo can make his own decisions.”

“No, but he’s still my son, and always will be. As long as I live and breathe, I’ll do my best to protect the lad.”

Too exhausted to argue, I just nodded and exited the car.

Back in my room, I tried to clear my mind of all thoughts. I didn’t want to risk attracting Frank. So, lying in bed, I pictured the ocean beneath a clear, blue sky. With waves and clouds to keep me company, my mind soon drifted to the last family vacation we enjoyed before my dad died. Recollections of the seashells, the pier, the picnic table covered in newspaper and crab carcasses, the cotton candy, and the salty sea air comforted me. That was my happy place, where my mind traveled to during stressful situations or at work when my client list bulged with distraught people just looking for their own little slice of the happy pie.

With a seagull flying overhead in the skyscape of my memory, I thought of how I’d coped all those years. Then I realized: Although I rejected the notion in the past, to understand Frank, I need to stop treating him as a peer and more like… a client. The approach hadn’t proved very productive with my self-diagnosis, but I hoped it would work on him. That final thought eased the last bit of tension keeping me from sleep, and I soon found myself on a quiet beach in my mind, watching the sun disappear over the horizon.
