“Okay, this is weird.”
After a full month of sidelong glances, whispered comments, and degrading catcalls, the one thing I never expected was to walk into school the next morning and be completely ignored. As I walked down the hall next to Josh, the students of Everly Prep went about their business like I wasn’t an object of their scorn put on this Earth to be tortured with wicked tongues or lascivious gazes.
For the first time since enrolling, no one was looking at me.
I cast a sideways glance at Josh, and he shrugged, his eyes wide with wonder. When we reached my locker, I leaned my back against it and let my eyes rove over the people crowded in the corridor.
“I assumed after yesterday’s fiasco at least one guy would offer to let me suck his cock,” I murmured from the corner of my mouth, injecting some false disappointment.
Laughter spewed from Josh’s mouth as he tried to cover it up with a cough. He shook his head at me and I smirked, proud that I could find some humor in this whole fucked up situation. A fucked up situation that kept getting weirder by the minute.
“Are the texts still coming in?” Josh asked as I turned to open my locker and retrieve my math book.
“No,” I said, slamming the metal door closed before leaning a shoulder against it. “They stopped yesterday afternoon. Not a peep since then, like everyone lost interest in torturing me.”
“Or like someone put a stop to it,” Josh replied and nodded at something behind me.
I looked over my shoulder and stopped breathing. The world slowed down and all I could hear was the pounding of my heart as Mason Bellamy strutted toward me, his sister at his side and the rest of the Rogues fanned out behind them.
“Morning, Chaz,” Stella chirped out as she linked an elbow through mine.
I stared helplessly at Josh as she pulled me away, but he just gave me a nod that screamed just go with it. His eyes moved from me to Theo, who passed right by Josh like he didn’t see him. The look of disappointment on my friend’s face made me want to call Theo out, right there in front of everyone, for being a liar and a hypocrite. But Josh met my eyes and shook his head slightly.
It wasn’t worth it.
I gave him a nod, but resolved to revisit the subject another time. Stella was jabbering on about some fashion designer like we were old friends and I knew exactly what she was taking about. But we weren’t, and I didn’t. I started to extricate myself, but her arm clenched down tighter on mine, trapping it.
“Pretend, Chaz,” she murmured under her breath before going off in another tangent in a louder voice.
She didn’t stop talking until we reached the end of the hall. She stopped walking and spun to face me, shooting me conspiratorial wink before speaking in a loud voice.
“Take care of my girl, Mason,” she said, releasing my arm.
