Back in her room, Sissy cried on her bed while Ludvig stood silently watching from a corner. When the crying reached a point where she could talk, she looked up at the young boy. “You lied to me,” she accused between choking sobs. “You told me that everything was going to be okay.”

Ludvig didn’t say anything. He just met her stare with his shining, brown eyes, filled with compassion and concern, and maybe a little bit of hurt.

She got to her feet and pulled her white dress up far enough to reveal one angry, red welt that had formed across the back of her thigh as a result of Bergyda’s brutality. She turned so that Ludvig could see it. “Does that look okay to you?” she barked, as another stream of sobbing poured out of her. She flung herself across the bed, allowing as many tears to come as would.

Over her own pitiful cries, she heard Ludvig’s shoes slapping rapidly across the floor as he fled through the open door. He was gone, just like that. Had she been wrong to get upset at him? He was just a kid after all. What was he supposed to do against a force like Bergyda? In dismay, she considered she just may have alienated the only semblance of a friend she had in this place.

“Ludvig, I’m sorry,” she called out. “I didn’t mean it.”

There was no answer. She realized then, he had left the door wide open. A mistake? What were they thinking, making a ten year old kid guard a prisoner, anyway? Did she dare try and make a run for it? She had clothes and shoes now, so why not? Bergyda, that’s why. The hot welts on her back and legs seemed to flare up in response as she thought about the woman. She had only been hit four times, and the pain was more than she could bear. Just imagine what kind of punishment you’d get for trying to escape, she thought.

And still, for some inexplicable reason, she was standing in front of the open doorway, looking across the hall at the stone wall. Hamred was to the left. What if she tried going right? Maybe that was the way out. It wouldn’t hurt to take a peek; they wouldn’t beat her for just looking. Would they?

Holding the rough, wooden door frame with both hands she slowly moved her head, just until her left eye cleared the doorway and could see down the hall. There was nothing there so she looked left. Also clear. She slid one foot across the wood floor and into the hallway, her sandal making a light scraping sound. Then, taking a deep breath, she followed with the other foot. Standing there, she whipped her head left, then right, then left again. She clutched her dress with fists at her sides, but it did little to calm her nerves. This was probably a one time shot. Was she going to do this? If she was, then it was now or never.
