CHAPTER
THIRTY-EIGHT
Bardot stayed behind at the crime scene, assuring Mac and Hudson that she would let them know as soon as she had something. She was apprehensive about this case, if she was right about the killers. There had been another similar case where a husband-and-wife team had spent their time trying to up the ante until it all came crashing down around them. They had gone out playing the deadly game of suicide by cop. She sincerely hoped this case wouldn't end the same way.
The huge crane dipped its thick cable into the water, where a professional police diver waited. He led the cable down and was gone for what seemed like too long. Bardot wondered if he couldn't find the car until the diver surfaced and gave the crane operator a thumbs-up.
While they were pulling Mac's SUV out of the water, the FBI's evidence response team was processing the large black diesel flatbed truck that had been used to push Mac and Hudson off the pier. Clearly, they had struck a nerve with the killer or killers. Bardot retraced the places they had looked into: Kremwerk, the Lady Carina angle, and Alice had definitely been involved somehow.
Alice didn't feel like a random killing to Bardot.
Most killers had an agenda or purpose for killing. This seemed almost purposefully random. The victims were different in about every way possible. The only two whoâd been linked were Alice and Ryan. The rest of the victims seemed to be all over the map. It just didn't make sense.
"Ma'am"âone of the technicians from the evidence response team came up to herâ"there are no prints in the truck, but we did find a synthetic piece of hair that looks like it came from a wig. The truck appears to have been hotwired. According to the Port Police, it was parked just down the way next to that old gray building."
"Any witnesses?" she asked the young tech.
"No, ma'am. There was a homeless man, but apparently he passed out and didn't see anything until, and I quote, âa hot wet lady and her mountain man came and woke him up with all their racket.â"
"Very well, thank you for the update. Let me know if you find anything else," she said, dismissing him as the bumper of Mac's now soggy, broken SUV crested the water's surface. Gallons of water flowed from the vehicle as it dangled from the crane. The damage to the back of the vehicle confirmed Mac and Hudson's story. Not that Bardot didn't find the two credible, but after years in her line of work, she believed in âtrust, but always verify.â
Once they got the SUV safely back on solid ground, Bardot walked over to the car to see Mac's purse soaking wet but still in the front seat. She had been lucky; the purse had been closed, and the strap had latched onto the gear shift, keeping it inside the SUV. She put on gloves and asked one of the technicians to hand her the purse.
