Walking With Corpses

Corpses don’t move fast, they just never stop. It seems the only thing that can stop them is destroying the brain or putting something impassible between you and them like a barrier or steep hill. We only have the van. Yes, it is large, but we need to have it moving and don’t want to make it an obstacle.

Jill jumps into the cab and I slide in behind the wheel real quick. Carl is finishing off dumping a jug of ethanol into the tank, and I hope what’s in the system is enough to get us started. The contents of the tank will mix as we drive, or that’s my hope.

Jill sticks her head out. “Finish it up!”

“Carl!” I call out. Corpses lumber around the corner, not more than fifty metres away. Damn they’re getting close.

“Just a little more.” Carl keeps dumping ethanol.

“It doesn’t have to be perfect. We got enough.” I push the keys into the ignition and twist. The starter tries to turn over the engine. “Shit, come on. Not now.”

“We may need to dump some into the intake. Pop the hood,” Carl says as he steps in front of the van.

I twist the ignition again. “No, go!”

“It’s no good if you don’t get out to the stores. Pop the hood. I’m going to stand here until you do, so might as well get it over with.”

Fucking hard-headed trucker. I want to beat him regardless of how I feel about him, but he has a point. We have to get the van started and he’s the one who can get it done with the small amount left if the jug. I pull the release.

The hood goes up and Carl gets to work. A few seconds pass. Corpses get closer. They’ve covered half the distance now. More round the intersection following the leaders.

I hit the horn. “Enough already!”

The hood drops and Carl motions for me to try again. The engine catches, revs up, and backs down to normal.

He rushes from in front of the van. “Now get out of here! I’ll see you back at camp.”

I drop the van into gear and slam on the gas. It lumbers forward at a good speed but I’m not trying to be an Indie driver, only need enough momentum up to make it through the crowd coming toward us. We hit them at forty. Corpses crash against the front of the van and slam to the ground. Others reach up at the windows with hands like claws. I don’t know how many I run over, but at times the wheels spin and I’m scared we’ll get stuck.

The wall of corpses thin, then we’re out of them, driving down an open road.

We pass the wholesale Housing and storage place, there’s only two of the homes left of their lot. Someone has scavenged them. I keep going, not worrying about who could be doing what. As we approach Stouffville Road, cars litter the intersection, just as they were when I took Mindy into town a lifetime ago.
