Jacobs was sitting in front of the condo he was supposed to be renting, waiting for the owner. He’d called the man a few hours earlier and agreed to meet at ten o’clock. Jacobs wanted to wait until after darkness had set in to disguise his movements somewhat. A couple minutes after ten, he saw a man walking along the pathway that led to the door. Jacobs quickly got out of his car and soon joined him.

“You the man?”

“If you own this house, then I am,” Jacobs said.

“Well, yeah, I am.”

“You got a name?”

“Call me Broxton.”

“That a first name or last name?”

“Either. That’s all my tenants need to know. The less we know about each other the better. Don’t care what you do, as long as you pay me on time and you don’t damage the place. Other than that, do whatever you like.”

“Works for me.”

Broxton then turned and walked over to the door, unlocking it. Once inside, he flicked on a light switch. To Jacobs’ surprise, it didn’t look too bad. He half expected trash on the ground, torn up furniture, and graffiti on the walls. Luckily, none of those things were present. It wasn’t lavishly furnished, but it had the basics, which was good enough. He hated the thought of getting furniture for it and actually moving his stuff. All that would do is take time away from his main business.

“What do you think of it?” Broxton asked.

Jacobs looked around the main room. “Not bad. Didn’t think it’d be furnished already.”

“Well, it ain’t the Taj Mahal, but it works, right? If you wanna bring in your own stuff, feel free.”

“This should work. All I need’s the basics.”

“Great, then you’re all set,” Broxton said, handing over the keys to the place.

“There something I need to sign?”

“Nope. I don’t do contracts or anything. Just a mess of paperwork that I don’t have the time or patience for. Just hand me the money and we’re all square.”

Jacobs reached into his pocket and removed an envelope, handing it to him. Broxton opened it and saw a large amount of cash. It looked like more than what he required. He quickly ran his fingers through the bills and counted.

“Little bit more here than I asked for.”

“Six months in advance,” Jacobs said. “Figured it was better for both of us.”

“Hey, works for me.”

With everything settled, Broxton left, leaving Jacobs to walk around his new place for a few minutes, getting the feel of it. It felt strange to him, being there in a different house, knowing this was where he would be staying for a considerable amount of time. Once he was done checking the place over, he went back to his car and brought in his stuff. After he got everything set up, he crashed on the couch and fell asleep.

When Jacobs woke up the next morning, he went to the neighborhood convenience store and picked up some things for his refrigerator. Once he was settled, he sat down at the kitchen table
