I came back to consciousness with the light of a small fire flickering on my face. I pushed myself slightly off the ground, but my arms were weak. Straining to discern my surroundings, I realized I was back in the clearing and my eyes darted every which way, knowing that somewhere there might be a wolf ready to pounce. Then I saw Troy, turned back into his human form, standing about ten feet away from me, leaning against a tree and staring pensively at the fire. He had a flask with him that he took an occasional sip from.

Staring at him for those quick seconds, I was mesmerized. He was more handsome than I remembered, but then again I suppose I’d never gotten a good look at him in the first place, it being so dark out and myself so panicked. What surprised me about this thought was the realization that I no longer felt panic in his presence. When he noticed I’d awoken, he walked over to me, and with each step closer the visceral fear returned. He was a man who could do anything he wanted with me, what choice did I even have in the matter?

“D—d-don’t hurt me,” I stuttered, small tears starting to form in the corners of my eyes. I blinked to keep them from streaming down my cheeks.

“Hurt you? That’s the last thing I’d want to do,” said Troy.

“Then why did you chase me down and bring me back here?”

“Because it wasn’t safe for you to leave.”

“Well, I’m not safe here either!” I screamed.

Troy gave me a stare of pure anger.

“Was I supposed to let you wander away, to get lost in the woods and die? Or worse, be taken by one of my enemies? Don’t be naïve,” he said, softening his glare as he realized how profoundly shaken I was by the events of this dark, terrible night.

“So you’ll let me go?” I asked hopefully.

“Of course. You’re free to go, just not now. You’ll spend the night with me. Besides, I don’t think you really want to leave.”

“That’s where you’re wrong. I want to get out of here more than anything in this world.”

“Is that so?” asked Troy, grazing my face with his hand.

This time I didn’t flinch. It’s not that I wasn’t scared, it’s just that for some reason my body didn’t react like it had before, something about his touch was strange and intriguing. I didn’t know if it was good or bad, but part of me wanted more.

“Y-yes,” I said.

“Are you sure you don’t want anything else?”

“Like what? What else could I possibly want?” I demanded, trying to sound defiant.

But there was something undeniably fascinating about this mysterious man, this strange shape-shifter who stood before me. His presence was having a pacifying effect on me that I couldn’t help but give into.

“Here,” he said, passing me his metallic flask. “Take a sip of this. It will help calm your nerves.”

My hand shook as I grabbed the flask and took a sip.
