THOSE poor women tore into the grilled dorado and almonds and quenettes we gave them, and one slightly pudgy woman in her late forties threw up because she’d eaten too fast. Then she began crying, and Chloe gave her a half dozen crackers she’d been hording in her backpack.

“This is how we’re going to die,” said Jane. “We’ll watch each other starve to death, and there’s nothing we can do about it. Nothing.”

“That’s not true,” I said. “We can teach you how to fish. We can loan you some gear. There are plenty of small boats left. It’s up to you. And so far the fish are safe. We’ve scanned them. There’s a lot of wood here to burn. We can help you get a fire started, so you’re not eating sushi every day.”

She thought about that and eventually nodded.
