FEARLESS HYENA II (1980)

“Lung Tang Foo Yeuk ”

PLOT : What plot there is centers around two brothers out to avenge their father’s death caused by a feud between the rival Ying/Yang and Heaven and Earth clans.

Unbelievably, despite suffering through the agony of Lo Wei’s filmmaking for years, Chan signed a new contract with the director, and Fearless Hyena II was to be the first film under this new agreement. But Chan shot only a few scenes before coming to his senses—or, to be more exact, finally took the advice of his manager—and jumped to the Golden Harvest ship, which was run by Raymond Chow.

After his cash cow moved on to greener pastures, Lo pieced together the scenes Chan had already shot, as well as the film’s outtakes and new footage with a Chan look-alike, and hoped to cash in on Jackie’s popularity. It didn’t work.

In 1983, Chan filed a lawsuit to prevent Lo Wei from releasing this film but dropped it after it was ruled that Lo could do whatever he wanted with film he legally owned.

THE YOUNG TIGER (1980)

PLOT : There is none to speak of.

This is simply a Jackie Chan compilation using clips from Spiritual Kung Fu, Shaolin Wooden Men, and who knows what else. Still feeling in a snit over being dumped by Chan and not content to simply put out a Triad hit on him, Lo Wei decided to squeeze the sponge dry. Hence, this mishmash of disjointed clips strung together in a way Lo Wei apparently thought could pass as a story.

The most interesting thing is how different Chan looks, since most of the footage is presurgery and predental work.

THE YOUNG MASTER (1980)

“Si Dai Chut Ma ”

PLOT : Chan stars in yet another takeoff on the Wong Fei Hung legend, playing a lazy young “Dragon” who avoids any type of schooling if possible. But things get busy for him after he is mistaken by authorities for his “brother” Tiger, who in turn is wanted for a murder he didn’t commit. While trying to clear his own name, Chan also works to prove Tiger’s innocence by finding the real killer, named Master Kan.

This film, which is difficult to find, was Jackie’s first for Raymond Chow’s Golden Harvest Films. Enjoying the sensation of being the man truly in charge, Chan jumped feet first into production. It was a case where a little less enthusiasm may have been called for. He began shooting before there was a finished script, resulting in a flimsy story.

But who needs plot when you have such a creative director? And Chan took advantage of his new autonomy by taking the time he felt each scene needed. Like shooting over three hundred takes for a fighting sequence featuring a paper fan.
