At first, things went as planned. Troy called every Saturday and they talked for hours. Amy could hear the excitement in his voice when he described the new country he now called home. Unfortunately, as time went by the stress of his job took over. It wasn’t long before the calls started coming less and less frequently.

“Amy, I’m sorry for calling so late. Meetings always go past the time allotted and things take three times longer than they should here in India. It fucking sucks.”

“It’s okay, Troy. I understand,” she assured him.

As the months progressed, however, after he missed more and more phone calls, Amy’s feelings changed. Troy’s treatment of her was hurtful. “What happened this time?” she huffed when he finally called.

“I had to travel across the country the last two weeks. You can’t believe how screwed up things are here. I spend most of my time putting out fires and not doing any actual work. Amy, please know it’s not personal.”

Amy heard the truth in his words, but it didn’t bring her any comfort. “I am so tired of sitting by the phone every Saturday hoping you’ll call.”

“I know. I’m sorry, Amy.”

“It’s going to be a long two years waiting for you.”

She heard him clear his throat before he said in a hesitant voice, “Amy, they lied to me. This is not a two-year commitment. I will have to be here at least three, if not four, years to complete the project. I was a fucking idiot to take this job.”

Her heart sank. Three to four years? How could she survive that long? “Why don’t you just quit and come home?”

“It’s not an option, this will make or break my career.” When she didn’t respond, he asked quietly, “Can you forgive me?”

Amy took pity on Troy because she knew his noble heart. “You didn’t know.”

“As much as I hate to do this to you, Aims, I have to get off the phone.”

Her anger returned and she barked, “Whatever.”

“Please don’t say that. I am not dismissing you, Amy. You have to understand I’m under a lot of pressure here.”

“To be honest, I am sick of understanding. Good-bye.”

Amy felt badly afterwards. She knew that Troy was carrying a ton of stress on his shoulders and she wasn’t helping matters. However, their relationship was unacceptable the way it was now. She couldn’t see herself living like this for the next three years—sitting around waiting for a man who had no time for her.

The next time they talked, Troy was the one who addressed the problem. “Amy, I love you. You know I do. My current situation is screwed up. I have no time for anything besides work and you deserve better.”

Having Troy say aloud what she was thinking in her head softened her heart. Maybe she could wait it out. Amy was certain Troy was her soulmate. How could she give up on him now? “It’s not as if I am the only one suffering. I know you hate this as much as I do, Troy.
