Chapter Thirty-Nine
Sierra
Sierra wanted to believe Ruthie was overreacting, but all the evidence pointed toward more violence. Someone out there had gone from killing to prove a point to killing anyone in their way, even someone with a badge.
They needed to be armed and ready.
Sierra headed for the steps to follow Ruthie. âIâll go with you. There might be something we can use on the third floor. I admit I didnât spend much time up there after seeing those photos.â
âOkay, but there were tools in the shed. The garage would be the other place for anything sharp,â Will said.
The frenzy of activity stopped. Only Ruthie kept moving. She disappeared onto the second floor.
Alex leaned against the breakfast bar, clearly still feeling the effects of whatever happened to him outside. âNo one is leaving this house. We stay in here. Together.â
Sierra didnât often side with Alex, but this time, yes. âAgreed.â
Cassie nodded. âWeâll take the kitchen.â
She started opening cabinets, shoving useless items aside and stacking pans on the counter. Alex went to the knife block. Will, as usual, stood there, as if he needed a few more minutes to process the plan.
To Sierra, the rules seemed simple: there were none. Anything they could swing, throw, or stab with needed to be collected. They had to be ready to unleash them all.
âHey.â Mitchâs whispered voice stopped her from taking another step. âIf you hear anything start to go sideways down here, you stay up there and hide. Sneak out on the roof if you have to but then go.â
âIâm notââ
âListen to me.â He moved to the step right below hers. Since he was a few inches taller that put them even with each other. âDo not try to save anyone, including me. Donât hang around for low tide to use the golf cart. Wait it out until morning or the storm clears, whichever comes first, so you have light and then swim.â
He was trying to save her. She got it. In his head, he brought her here, but in reality, sheâd insisted. Maybe not exactly, but sheâd pushed him and landed them both here.
She touched the side of his face. It might be her only chance before their worlds exploded, so she gave in to the need. âWe go together. Iâm coming right back down.â
âDonât.â He leaned into her palm. Just for a second, but it was enough. Then he trudged down the steps and shoved Will. âDonât just stand there. Do something.â
Sheâd always joked that sheâd be the first to die in a horror movie. Sheâd curl up in a ball in the closet and wait. Go out first and save the heartache of running and watching people die. Now she knew better.
She blocked the panic from seeping in as she jogged up the last few steps. She walked past the partially closed door to Ruthie and Willâs room. The sound of Ruthie rummaging around floated into the hallway. Nothing unusual under the circumstances, but Sierra doubled back and pushed the door open.
