Chapter Ten
After five minutes, he got rid of the joint, sat back down, and said, “We should be far enough away now.”
I blew out a breath. “What’s a Sage?” I was surprised that this was the first question out of my mouth, but I just went with it.
“Witches have a hierarchy based on the amount of power you possess. Sage is one of them.”
“I’m guessing it’s pretty good? That incubus, or whatever you called it, was scared of you after you mentioned it.”
He snorted out a laugh. “You could say that.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
He sighed and put his feet up on the dash—I no longer bothered to yell at him, I’d forever have boot marks on it. “Sage is high, yes.”
“So you’re really powerful?”
I saw him shrug out of the corner of my eye. “If you call being the most powerful witch in the world powerful, then yes, I am.”
My eyes widened. Was he just messing with me? “Are you serious?”
“Yeah, I’m up in the top spot, have been since I was sixteen. I’m the youngest to reach Sage level in history.” He shrugged again, and I could tell that he didn’t really care about this Sage stuff which was surprising considering how self-centered he was all the time. He shot me a sharp glance and I cringed, figuring he’d heard my thought.
“Sorry,” I muttered.
He waved me off. “Whatever. I know what you think of me.”
Wow. He was even pissier than usual. That joint didn’t help at all. “Stop reading my mind and you won’t have that problem.”
He actually snorted out a laugh, which made me smile a little.
“So the youngest witch to become a Sage, huh?”
“Just ‘Sage’ not ‘a Sage,’ but yes. Witches tend to get stronger with age, so it was not received well by many of the elders.”
Wow. So basically, no one would be able to surpass him… ever.
“Actually, if anyone could, it’d be Basil. He’s younger than me and very powerful, probably the second most powerful in the world, although we’ve kept this a secret after the many assassination attempts on me and my family. We don’t need another bullseye painted on our backs.”
“Assassination attempts?”
He waved me off. “I’d rather not get into the bullshit of witch politics right now. This day has been stressful enough as it is.”
“Okay, understandable. Can you explain what you were talking about back there? With the cloaking thing or whatever?”
“Demons give off a certain energy, and the stronger they are, the easier it is to track them, but I haven’t been having any luck tracking our kuma mali demon on my own, so I thought a little fae magic was in order. Demons are basically the anti-fae, the dark to their light. Without one, you cannot have the other; they balance each other. They’re two ends of the same string, which means that they’re connected, and therefore, they have an easy time picking up the energy of their opposites. The fae try to keep the demons in check because they know if left to themselves, they’d destroy our world and nothing would be left.
