Chapter Eighteen – Talia

When Cayde’s dragon landed in the field behind the house, everything they needed was already packed. Dove had loaned Talia the clothes she would need. Suri was also kitted out for the journey, even if she only had boys’ clothes to wear, thanks to a quick phone call from Dove to Beau’s aunt. Within a half-hour of the call, Ellen had arrived with a selection of clothes Beau had outgrown which just about fit Suri, with the help of a belt.

Dove had proven to be capable and resourceful and Talia’s admiration for her deepened.

“I can’t thank you enough for putting the work on the farm on pause to help us,” Talia told her as they waited for Cayde to shift and join them.

“That’s what friends are for.” She reached for Joron’s hand as he stared at the dragon. “And Cayde has always been a good friend.”

“He has.” Joron’s mouth tugged up at one corner as he switched his attention to his mate.

“If you want to go with him, you should go,” she whispered.

“No!” Talia replied a little sharply. “I mean... I think... I feel that this is something Cayde feels he needs to do on his own. It’s his to put right. At least that’s how he sees it.”

“How who sees what?” Cayde asked as he appeared in his human form.

“Shifters and their incredible hearing,” Dove said brightly, although her fears for Cayde were hard to hide.

Was Talia right to turn down help from Joron? Having another dragon by their side would be a great help in a tight situation.

“Talia said you want to do this alone,” Joron replied.

Talia’s cheeks flamed red. She’d answered for Cayde even though she barely knew him. But Cayde nodded in agreement.

“Then we’d better get you packed.” Joron let go of Dove’s hand and went to the packs, checking them over for the fourth time.

“Where is Suri?” Cayde asked.

“She’s with the dogs. I think she’d climb in the bed with Sky and the puppies if she had the chance. She loves them.” Dove glanced from Cayde to Talia and then turned toward the house. “I’ll go get her.”

“Are you all right?” Talia asked Cayde. He seemed tired, his face pale.

“Yes. Picking out which treasure I was going to take was harder than I expected.” He sighed, his shoulders heaving as he let out a breath. “I know to you it might seem like gold and jewels, but it’s a part of me, every single piece.”

She cupped his face in her hands as she saw the pain and anguish he fought. “I know. And it’s okay.”

“Is it?” He lifted the pack in his hand, and it jingled like sleigh bells. “Now I’m thinking I should have gotten more.”

Talia closed her hand around the straps of the backpack and weighed it in her hand. “I don’t think the pack could take anymore. The seams would split and then we would leave a trail of treasure, and what good would that do?”

“I’ll put it inside another pack.
