TWO YEARS AGO, THE MEDICAL GALA

I study my reflection in the bedroom mirror and feel like I’m looking as good as I can for the evening ahead. I had my hair and nails done earlier and I also picked up a new dress for this occasion tonight. I have transformed my look, curling my dark locks, and I’ve been slightly overzealous with the eye shadow. I’ve experimented and quite like the effect, feeling like the extra makeup really accentuates my eyes.

Overall, I am ready to present the best version of myself shortly.

I’m feeling, and looking, like a glamorous doctor’s wife.

I’m sure the doctor himself will approve.

‘Are you nearly ready?’ I call out to Drew before picking up my glass of wine and taking a sip, noticing after I have that I have left a red semi-circle of lipstick on the rim. There’s no need to reapply my makeup because that was the effect I was going for: lots of red. And some of it will rub off on whatever my lips touch tonight because, as always, I like to leave my mark.

Drew hasn’t answered me, but that might just be because there is music playing in the house and I don’t think too much of it as I rummage through the contents of my clutch bag and make sure I have everything that I need in there. Other than a few makeup accessories, there isn’t much I’m required to carry. Drew will have his wallet for the taxi but once we get to tonight’s venue the drinks are free, which is convenient, and I very much plan to overindulge at the open bar.

As Drew presumably finishes up admiring his own reflection in the bathroom mirror, combing his hair and adjusting the bowtie on his tuxedo, I think about the reason for the pair of us beautifying ourselves on this Friday night. We are attending a medical gala, a large and glitzy charity event that brings together all the finest doctors in the Manchester area for an evening of eating, drinking, networking and raising some urgently required funds for various worthy causes in the city. It will be great to be in a room full of all sorts of interesting people, from the doctors themselves to their partners. It will also be nice to feel like we are giving back because, between us all, we should raise tens of thousands of pounds for charity as we bid on various items at auction.

I had a look at the website for the event earlier and saw some of the things we will get the opportunity to bid on later and I already have my eye on one of them. It’s a two-night stay for two in a five-star hotel in the Scottish Highlands and I’d love nothing more than enjoying that getaway with Drew. I can see us already, wandering around lochs and taking selfies in front of spectacular mountains before returning to the plush hotel and sitting by a roaring fire wearing
