Chapter Twenty-Six
We were in the middle of setting up the final lab practical exam in Gross Anatomy when Bill Orrick was called away for a meeting with Dr. Roberts. Bill wasnât happy with being interrupted while setting up the exam, which always turned out to be a five or six hour long ordeal.
All of the Anatomy faculty were required to participate in setting up the practical exams and âtaggingâ various dissected structures that the students would have to identify on each of the cadavers. Tagging involved tying one end of a piece of colored crochet thread to a particular body structure and the other end to a small plastic tag with a number on it, then writing down the name of the structure next to that number on the answer key sheet.
For the practical exam, the students were divided into six groups, with each group moving from one lab to the next at the sound of a bell. When the students entered a lab, they would have fifteen minutes to go to each of the cadavers in that lab and write down the name of the tagged structures next to the appropriate number on their answer sheet.
There were usually four tagged structures on each cadaver, two on each side of the body. With close to forty cadavers, that was a lot of tags. Sounds simple, but it never turned out that way. For one thing, not all of the structures were dissected out adequately, which meant that in order to tag a particular structure, an instructor had to âclean upâ the dissection that the students had attempted to do. That took time. And to make matters worse, a few of the instructors didnât know their Anatomy as well as they should, so they misidentified the structures that they tagged on the answer key.
A running list of what was tagged was kept so that there would be a balance between questions on muscles, nerves, arteries, veins, etc. Even so, there was always some duplication in the tagging that had to be adjusted. And finally, when it seemed like all the tagging was complete and the answer key could be finalized, Bill Orrick insisted on going back over and approving every one of the tags â cadaver by cadaver â with all of us trailing behind him. Of course, he was never happy with what we had done, and he would invariably make adjustments to a majority of the tags himself. Not only was that another time consuming procedure, but, by doing that, Orrick managed to piss off some of the more thin-skinned instructors because they found it demeaning of their efforts.
Stripping off his gloves impatiently, Orrick turned to the instructors and said, âKeep going. Ronald, youâre in charge while Iâm gone.â
As he made his way to Robertsâ office, Bill mumbled under his breath, âWhat the hell does he want? Doesnât he know Iâm right in the middle of setting up an exam?â
Mrs. Sanders wasnât at her desk when he entered her outer office, so Orrick stuck his head in the door to Dr.
