“Absolutely not.” I hated raising my voice to Calla, but she had grown to have no compunction about matching my energy.

If she’d reacted by dissolving into tears—even let out a single sob of despair— I probably would have fallen to my knees and begged her forgiveness. However, much like the way she dug in her heels over seeing Cross punished, she was not giving in. And I was certain the glossy sheen in her eyes was fury, not sadness.

I admired it. It aroused me even, much to my surprise. I took it as further proof that she was absolutely destined to be mine, and my perfect match in every way. But I also hated that she was arguing with me over trying to keep her safe.

The conversation had started calmly over dinner, but had escalated once we’d left the round table in the dining room and returned to our apartment.

“It is my magic. Shouldn’t I get the final say?” She perched her hands on her hips, eyes ablaze.

There was another flash of heat through my blood, and I had to temper the wild flare of energy my body channeled, torn between rage and lust. “You know not what you’re asking me!” I saw her flinch at the edge in my voice and lowered my tone. “Calla, please. Try to understand why I’m against it.”

She came forward, taking my hands into hers, much like I would do when she needed comfort. I hated that it worked so easily. A full breath filled my lungs, and I felt much calmer than I had moments before. “I do understand, Rylan. Completely, in fact. I need to learn how to use my powers safely. You will not always be at my side to protect me—”

“I will if I can help it,” I growled, drawing her frustration in the form of an exasperated eye roll as her head lolled to the side.

“But there will be times, like it or not, when we are not together. And I need to know how to use every weapon at my disposal. Blade, bow, magic. This is what you told me the other day while you tried to make a swordsman out of me.”

I got a prickle in my veins at the realization she had turned my own logic against me—and skillfully so. “Yes, but—”

“It only makes sense that I utilize what I have available to ensure I don’t destroy myself, others, or any buildings in the process. Please, Rylan. This is important to me. It’s part of who I am. One of the only parts I know. Besides, what if this helps break through the veil in my mind? It seems every step we try, we get closer—”

“And every step causes you pain, distress. Destruction!”

“Which only means the sooner I can remember everything, the better, right?” The frustration in her eyes had given way to sadness.

I softened, my shoulders sagging as she gazed at me in that special way she had, like she was looking into my dark soul.
