Chapter 19

Showing her ID, Detective Ricigliano escorted Sarah outside, her hand on Sarah’s arm as she led her to a black Suburban.

The detective opened the passenger door, released Sarah’s arm, and gestured for her to hop in.

“Are you detaining me?” Sarah asked. “Because that won’t work.”

Ricigliano looked her up and down. “I want one coffee with you to earn your trust. After that, we decide together what’s next. Would that work for you?”

Sarah studied the area around her. The courthouse was buzzing with activity as more police cars entered the parking lot. So many members of the legal community scoured the area for Edward Sweeney.

Ricigliano was her immediate ticket out of this mess.

There were at least two more hours before she needed to steal the car Vivian told her to take, so there was time to humor the detective.

Sarah hopped inside the Suburban. “That’ll work for me.”

Ricigliano closed the passenger door, walked around the front of the vehicle, then hopped in and got them rolling quickly.

“Somewhere downtown,” Sarah said. “I have things to do after we talk.”

Ricigliano glanced over at her. “Talk first. Those things, whatever they are, can wait.”

She respected Ricigliano’s confidence and strength, but Sarah had already made a crucial mistake by not saying Alistair’s name to Ed. She could only hope the repercussions of that mistake weren’t too damaging. She would not make another error by failing to steal the car her sister wanted her to steal, even though doing something as stupid as stealing a car made little to no sense.

From where she sat, it was easy to watch the detective drive, but her blazer covered any chance at glimpsing a holster and Sarah still needed a gun.

“What brought you to the courthouse?” Ricigliano asked.

“On the phone last night, you said you knew me and what I do.”

“That’s right.”

“Then you know about my sister?”

“I understand you have a way to speak with her.” She glanced at Sarah, then back to the road. “Or is it the other way around? Your sister speaks to you?”

“She tells me shit.”

Ricigliano hit her blinker, waited a moment, then made a right turn.

“Well,” she said. “Why were you in that courtroom, then?”

“My sister told me to be there.” Sarah figured there was no reason to lie about it. Edward Sweeney was involved, that much was obvious. Better the detective knew sooner rather than later.

Ricigliano made another turn onto Yonge Street, then slowed to enter the parking lot at the Eaton Centre. It brought back memories for Sarah from the food court where Rod Howley was killed by the Rapturites so many years ago.

“Let’s have a coffee at the Starbucks in the mall,” Ricigliano said. “It’ll give us a chance to talk about what’s happening.”

Wondering what motivated a woman like Ricigliano, Sarah asked, “Why talk? What’s in it for you?”

“What do you mean?”

“Why not just arrest me and hand me over to the American authorities so they can take me back to Santa Rosa?”

“Because I believe you’re innocent.” Ricigliano slowed the Suburban and edged into a spot.
