Unfortunately, all this nastiness applies to eggs and dairy, as well. In all, it is a very troubling system that you should avoid funding. However, as with all my recommendations, they are intended to be followed under optimal conditions, and I understand that life is not always optimal. Avoiding factory-farmed meat altogether is a very difficult thing to do given our food system. Most of the meat available for purchase in America comes from factory farms and it is certainly economically reinforced—in other words, it is cheaper. If you even have alternative sources for meat in your area, the cost can be much higher than just going to the grocery store. It is important that we all do what we can to incentivize sustainable and just systems for producing meat. But, it is also important to pay our monthly bills. Do the best you can.
When to Eat
There is a growing body of evidence showing the power of meal timing, or, put in a different way, the power of eating only when our bodies evolved to be eating. The act of eating does more to our bodies than simply provide them with fuel. Every time we eat, we are initiating a complex system of signals and hormones. We have a pretty good handle on the balance of insulin, the hormone that takes fuel from your bloodstream and gets it into your cells, and glucagon, the hormone that tells the stored fuel in your cells to mobilize into your bloodstream. Other aspects we don’t understand as well, like how the body’s circadian rhythm regulates metabolism.
Circadian rhythm is the term given to the body’s natural cycle of activity and rest. This rhythm has been observed in all biological life and really bad things happen if it is severely disrupted. The most obvious example of the circadian rhythm is the sleep-wake cycle. If a person is perpetually awake when the body should be asleep and vice versa, it appears to have negative health consequences. People who work night or swing shifts often have worse health outcomes than those of us fortunate enough to be able to sleep at night and be awake during the day. There is even a medically recognized condition known as shift work syndrome, and it is associated with a greater risk of cancer, heart disease, metabolic disorder, and menstrual disruption. Though we don’t fully understand it yet, it looks like eating in agreement with your natural circadian rhythm has powerful metabolic benefits.
We, as a society, have gotten into the bad habit of eating almost constantly. We eat breakfast as soon as we wake up, we have a sugar-laden latte on the way to work, we have our mid-morning work snack, then lunch, an afternoon snack, dinner, and a bedtime snack. I’m being hyperbolic but you get the point. It even became weight-loss advice to eat constantly. You all remember how we were advised to eat six meals a day to “keep your metabolism active all day,” whatever that means.
In reality,
