Catriona explained Sarah’s proposal and the captain frowned. “I do not think that the girl will be a fitting friend for you. She is a whore and a shrew.”

“She was very kind to me, Aidan - she offered to be my friend.”

“What of me, then?” His eyes twinkled, so she knew he was only joking. “Am I not your friend?”

“You - you are different, Aidan. I do not know what to call you.”

“People have called me many things – none of which I wish to repeat here!” He smiled down at her and squeezed her to him. However Catriona couldn’t help thinking about the poor innocents that his associate took from their homes just so Aidan could have his wicked way with them.

She was still thinking when a tall, well built dark skinned man appeared on the path and beckoned Aidan over.

Aidan did so, and as Catriona started to follow, he quickly turned and ordered her to return to camp. She jumped at the sudden sharpness in his voice and scurried off, leaving Aidan alone with the man she knew was Rinaldo.
