Anya

Anya squinted into the sky, no longer seeing the helio. ‘Maybe this is a test and if we wait a few minutes, they’ll circle back for us. Maybe the others were dropped in different locations.’

The longer she stared, the more the sun dazzled her. And the more she remembered not seeing any outward damage to the machine.

Sheila shook her arm. ‘Hey, we took two hits to the helio but I saw no damage to it.’ She turned her suspicious gaze on Ruby. ‘Now, why would that be?’

Ruby gave an exaggerated shrug. ‘I don’t know. I was dumped here, just like you.’

Sheila, the person with the least cool, assessed the open area. ‘We’re sitting ducks out here. How about we all find cover, wait for the Sols to come back, okay?’

Ruby sighed. ‘She’s right.’

Sheila took charge and pointed at a cluster of trees in the distance.

‘No, that’s where the Exiled live,’ said Ruby.

‘It’s either that or we become target practice.’ Sheila marched on.

Anya followed her, not seeing that they had much choice. The surrounding forest spanned as far as the eye could see. The Exiled couldn’t protect all parts of it. Their group just had to be careful.

Ruby sighed and trudged along. While they followed Sheila, Anya kept one eye on the surrounding open area and the tree line. She wished she knew more about the Exiled, their habits, how they lived. If they were friendly to visitors.

Friendly? Not from what she’d heard.

The Exiled that lived near the San Fran Sect were Moles mostly. Pissed off at being ousted from their own Sect. She assumed the lowest class of residents in the Seattle Sect had been relegated to these woods, equally angry and in no mood to roll out the red carpet. The only way to survive out here was to avoid them.

Fine by her.

She’d had her fill of Moles and their propaganda lies. She and Cynthia, her synth friend, had enough run-ins with them before Anya had entered the Region.

Sheila kept a healthy pace, with Ruby on her heels. Anya picked up the pace. Last again. What was wrong with her?

She scanned the skies for orbs, hovering cameras she’d seen around the Corp, something she expected could be out here too. Why let your enemies know your location when you could keep an eye on them from a safe distance? It was what she would do if she lived out here. The people were outcasts for a reason. Anyone who posed a threat to the law-abiding citizens of the Sect needed to be dealt with.

Sheila and Ruby entered the trees a few meters ahead of Anya and disappeared from sight. Her heart pounded with fear and she moved faster, worried she might lose them. She entered the same area of forest, a dense overgrowth of branches and brambles and not much in the way of a path. Ahead of her was nothing but trees. All around her, the same.

She stopped, her breaths coming faster. Where were the others?

‘Sheila, Ruby,’ she whisper-shouted.
