Revivalism is a Protestant practice of convening special meetings to convert new people to Christianity or encourage spiritual renewal among established Christians.

Recent Presbyterian history witnessed both division and reunion. Presbyterians disagreed over certain elements of the Reformed tradition, like predestination and election, total depravity and infant damnation, and the restriction of communion to members of the church. The bottom line in many of these disputes has a familiar ring: How much can the American Presbyterianism stray from the Westminster Confession and still be Presbyterian? The PCUSA today is drawn into factions over confessional standards, with a large-scale Confessing Church movement emerging within the denomination that seeks member congregations willing to ascribe to the historic confessions of the Reformed tradition, rather than make adjustments in light of contemporary social, cultural, and political change. They hope to use their numbers to influence policy decisions in the General Assembly.
