CHAPTER NINE

ANDRES HAD ALREADY called twice by the time Lena made it into the office the next morning. She stood beside her desk and fingered the pink telephone slips, pondering what to do. She didn’t want to call him back because she couldn’t tell him everything she was feeling. His touch had affected her even more than it used to; she was reeling from the emotions that had taken place between them. Their relationship had always been a powerful one, but last night had gone beyond even that.

She knew only one thing for certain. They couldn’t repeat what had happened. Not until she had things sorted out.

Her ringing phone saved her. Dropping the messages, she picked up the receiver, listened to Bradley’s news of a call-out, then raced out into the hallway, grateful for the interruption. Fifteen minutes later, she was in a squad car heading due west toward Fort Walton with Bradley at the wheel.

A small community between Pensacola and Destin, Fort Walton had its share of SWAT calls. Most of the military people from Eglin Air Force Base lived within its confines or nearby, and the soldiers had the same problems a lot of young men did—too much energy and not enough money. They were highly trained and highly stressed and things sometimes got tense.

But this wasn’t to be one of those times. Lena’s cell phone rang before they could get on-site.

“Turn around,” Sarah said calmly. “Everything’s over.”

Lena put a hand over her phone and looked at Bradley. “It’s Sarah. She says to forget about it.”

He raised his eyebrows and slowed the car.

“What happened?” Lena asked.

“It was a fugitive arrest, a parolee. The parole office hadn’t seen him in about three months and they finally tracked him down. They thought there was going to be trouble, but the guy came out when his mother happened to show up. They took him down and everything’s fine. The Fort Walton people will wrap it up.”

Hanging up the phone, Lena explained and Bradley headed back to the office. The aborted call was a harbinger of what was to come. Missing reports, a canceled court appearance, two men out with the flu…Lena was exhausted by the time she finished the paperwork that had piled up on her desk and was shocked to discover it was 7:00 p.m. She pushed her chair back, rolled her neck, then the phone rang.

Jeff’s voice answered her weary hello. “How you doing, Sis?”

“You don’t really want to know.” She put a hand on her side. Beneath her fingers, her scar throbbed.

“Sure, I do, that’s why I’m calling. How about some Mexican food and beer? I’m heading over to La Paz. Come with me.”

She considered his offer. Nothing sounded better than a cold Corona, but the reminders of Andres’s calls glared at her from the corner of her desk. Two more had been added to the ones that had been waiting for her when she’d arrived. “Jeff, I’d love to, but you wouldn’t believe the day I’ve had. I better head home and crash.
