APRIL 4
East Point, Georgia
9:25pm
After traveling for three straight days, Ameera was exhausted. She had arrived in Toronto and had no trouble clearing Customs. From there, she was taken to a remote area near Sarnia on the Canadian-U.S. border where she was met by a team that smuggled her across. She had then slept for much of the 12-hour drive to Georgia. She pulled a floppy hat over her head and face and slipped into the Atlanta apartment under the cover of darkness. She hadnât seen her father in over a year and she was excited about being reunited.
âPapa!â Ameera ran into his arms when she saw him.
âMy princess!â Dr. Saad said. After their embrace, he held her at armâs length and said, âWho is this blonde girl? I donât recognize you!â
âI had to change my appearance after the American devils recognized me in Paris,â Ameera said.
âIâm glad youâve joined me. After all our planning, the time has come. We are here in the enemyâs land to punish them for their violence and bloodshed toward our family,â Dr. Saad said.
âHow is the work going, Papa?â
âCome see for yourself.â
They walked out the door of the apartment and down the stairs. A block away, they entered what appeared to be an abandoned warehouse. Dr. Saad pushed a speed dial number on his cell phone and a large door opened. Inside the small lobby, two other team members, Ali and Nasser, looked in bewilderment at the girl with the short, blonde hair.
Ali spoke up and said, âWho is this stranger with you?â
âThis is my daughter, Ameera,â Dr. Saad said.
The two men instantly recognized their teammate then and greeted her, âSalaam alaikum, Ameera.â Ali and Nasser were his lab assistants and drivers. They were scientists like him, but they had pledged to die for the cause if necessary.
Dr. Saad punched a code into the keypad beside a door and it opened for them. They walked into a modern lab with over a dozen large metal boxes that looked like oversized stainless steel refrigerators. But there were no doors or handles.
âThese are the molecular multipliers. You can think of them as chambers where the toxin is multiplying and expanding like yeast placed in a refrigerator. With the concentrated samples you sent by your friend, weâve been able to make almost 500 gallons of botulinum toxin.â
âCome.â Dr. Saad then led Ameera through another door into a room that felt like an industrial refrigerator because it was so cold. She saw dozens of yellow plastic jerry cans, each having a capacity of over seven gallons.
âThe toxin is very stable at this temperature. It isnât until it is warmed up that it becomes lethal. In a few more days, weâll have our target of 500 gallons,â Dr. Saad said proudly.
âSo when do we attack? And what is our target?â Ameera asked.
Dr. Saad paused. âI could tell you, but there is still a chance this operation could be compromised. If you were captured, it would be better if you didnât know these details yet.
