FBI Agent Ibrahim Al-Faqih casually scanned the sports section of the Seattle Times. His trip had been a colossal waste of time so far, and now he had a couple hours to kill before catching a return flight to Washington, D.C. Every time he glanced at his phone, it seemed to drag the wait out longer.

The Abraham Lincoln Building was a gray thirteen story highrise on 2nd Avenue, near the waterfront in Seattle. It was just a couple blocks away from the Bainbridge Island Ferry. He had considered catching a ride across and back just to kill time, but that would cut his visit close. Al-Faqih had no interest in extending this visit.

Absentmindedly he opened another package of Peanut M&M’s. The one advantage that the material world had was chocolate. When this world is extinguished, it will be the one loss he would feel. Humans had taken a simple bean, processed it, then mixed it with ordinary ingredients like milk and sugar and made a little bit of heaven. As close to heaven as he ever wanted to be.

Al-Faqih stretched his long legs, and then shoved a handful of candy in his mouth as he turned the page. The door to the conference room opened quickly and one of the local FBI agents pushed his head in.

“Agent Al-Faqih. We are getting reports of a shooting at Seattle Harborview Medical Center. It’s on the news. You might want to see this,” the agent said. “We are monitoring radio traffic. SPD is enroute.”

“Sounds like a local problem, unless they ask for our help,” Al-Faqih said. He tipped the bag back and filled his mouth with M&M’s. “They are already wasting our time with that shooting in Bellevue.”

It took several more minutes to finish the sports section. Outside of the conference room, people rushed up and down the hallways. Petty mortals with petty mortal concerns. Al-Faqih opened another bag of M&M’s—this time with peanut butter. Truly, the pinnacle of what humans have accomplished.

Suddenly his chest burned. He coughed, and half melted M&M’s wet with spit scattered all over the sports section of the Seattle Times. Each candy left a colored slobbery skid mark across the page.

The pressure on his chest increased, like an elephant as it pressed a giant foot down on him. Black tears rolled from his eyes as the weight increased. Al-Faqih gasped for air like he really needed the stuff. He knew the agony of the pain of one of his kindred in the throes of death.

Then it was gone. The pain of one of his brothers, gone from this world. It was like a divine switch had been flipped, smashing him like a cry for help. Al-Faqih also knew who had departed the mortal realm—Al-Kanani.

He slammed his huge fist against the table, and then stormed out of the conference room. The FBI agent looked to the left, then right. Al-Faqih could see a crowd gathered down the hall. He stormed towards them. They had surrounded a flat-screen television in a hallway intersection.
