Chapter 14

The last ring hop proved to be no more trouble than the previous three, and the little band of misfits found themselves only a few miles away from the River Lethe. Any closer and the loss of memory would creep into the equation ultimately turning all their work into a disaster. They simply couldn't risk it.

Before even the first ring jump, and subsequent crossing of the Acheron, Katherine had contemplated leaving the boys in a known safe zone and attempting to fly in all the way to the Lethe. It was the unknown that finally convinced her not to. Too many what ifs - all performed without the help of her protectors. Nobody wanted to look at the white bubalos in the room, the biggest what if of them all . . . Exxa.

What if the dragon succumbed to one of the Sacred Rivers while she and Katherine flew straight to the Lethe? What if the river of forgetfulness robbed her of the ability to think? How would she move a creature of that stature all by herself, or even worse, without the memory of her rider, would she be passive? Facing off to a dragon that knows something's wrong, but doesn't necessarily remember you're not the problem, could prove to be a fatal flaw in the plan.

Keeping everyone together was critical to the success of the group, but there was a limit to which Katherine was unsure of, a line in the sand that shouldn't be crossed. They were now standing at that line.

Exxa told her rider to stand in front of her and hold out her hands. The Dark Lord's Daughter complied but had no idea why. The dragon leaned her head down until it almost touched Katherine's fingers, and a single tear dropped onto them. It solidified instantly into a tear shaped crystal, slightly cold to the touch and gleaming in the sunlight.

Exxa's essence radiated from the tear, and Katherine felt what the dragon felt, each heartbeat and every emotion since the day of her hatching. No longer was she just Katherine Pendragon, today the little girl had touched something so much larger than herself. She understood now what it meant to bond with a dragon, what it meant to be a rider. Katherine saw this future's past and her role in today's changing variables. She had become the Ariella and accepted the mantle. Regardless of her age, she could no longer be a child. If the little girl entered the Caves of Ice, the mortal side would perish. But the Ariella was expected and would thrive in the sub-zero environment with her mind intact. No dragon could survive the ordeal, not even Exxa.

The Ariella tore her eyes away from the crystal and gazed up at her dragon.

"You knew all along. Why didn't you tell me?"

Exxa played bells and wrapped her rider in a cocoon of pure joy.

"I wanted to, but it's more of a journey than a destination. There was so much more to understand first.
