Lila and I stand in the small side yard at Monica's beach house. When I mentioned to her that I was going to have to make a flower garden and enter it in a contest, she got giddy with excitement. It turns out Lila was taught how to garden by her grandmother, who was a notorious green thumb.

I would not call myself a green thumb. Everything I've ever bought in the way of plants has died a slow, painful death. As soon as they are put in my car at the plant store, it's like they're walking to the electric chair. I think the plants know it.

"Okay, so we already have some pre-existing azaleas here, which is good. They will be blooming soon. That will add a wonderful pop of color."

I stare at her. "Whatever you say."

"I suggest we add some other plants. Maybe some rosebushes, some Gerbera daisies. Oh, and some lantana! How could I forget that?"

“I don’t know!” I say, sarcastically, as I throw my hands in the air.

"We might even try some marigolds. I think this is an Encore azalea…" she mutters to herself as I stare out over the ocean. This task is going to be the most boring for me. I've never enjoyed gardening, and I could not care less whether I win a gardening contest or not.

"Are you hungry?"

"I'm always hungry," Lila responds as she bends down and looks at random green sprigs coming up in the garden area.

"What do you say we go inside and make some lunch? I had groceries delivered this morning."

Lila and I drove separately to the beach house because she needs to leave later for an appointment. I’m thankful she agreed to come and look at the garden today so we can start planning for that.

"Sounds good. Have you applied for the contest yet?"

We walk toward the back door to the house. "Not yet. I'm going to do that online today."

As we go inside the house, I'm thankful for air conditioning. Even though it's early spring, it's already getting hot. We don't have long, cold winters in this area. I'm just thankful the humidity hasn't hit yet. Once summer comes, you take a shower, step outside, and you need to take another shower.

"So, I have some big news,” Lila says as we walk into the kitchen. I go to the refrigerator and pull out some lunch meats and sliced cheese. I retrieve the bread from the counter, as well as a new jar of mayonnaise. "Oh yeah? What?"

"I'm going on a date this weekend."

"Really? Already?" Lila just got divorced, and I can't imagine going on a date so soon. Especially since she said she wasn't going to date for quite some time.

"I was surprised, too. I really wasn't thinking about dating, but I met this guy at the grocery store the other day. We started talking about cuts of meat, of all things,” she says, laughing.

“Are you sure you’re ready?”

“Nope,” she says, laughing. “But how can we ever be sure we’re ready for anything in life? What if this guy is my actual soulmate?”

I roll my eyes.
