CHAPTER TWELVE

Breakfast at the Bruce family table was filled with laughter. Michela, Madeline, and Malcolm were happy because their father was home. Beverly was content. Their joy made her feel wonderful, better than ever before, and she simply enjoyed the many conversations.

Once their meal was completed, Michela immediately took over and cleaned off the table. Beverly helped her. The rest sat at the table still involved in the family conversations.

Robert finished his third cup of orange juice and said to his oldest daughter, “Michela, you and I need to talk about a few things.”

Knowing exactly what he meant, she revealed, “The engagement is off, Dad.”

Robert was very pleased and nodded his approval. He asked, “What made you change your mind?”

“It’s very complicated and a very long story.”

“Okay, but we won’t be revisiting the subject of marriage again, right?” He asked with raised eyebrows.

“No, not until I fall in love with someone.”

“Lets hope it’s not within the next five to ten years.” Robert commented.

Hera did not say a word. She still wanted Michela to marry Jacob. It didn’t bother her in the least that Jacob was Violet’s son. Michela would be taken care of for the rest of her life. She didn’t have to worry about money, and she’d be set. Hera couldn’t picture anything wrong with marrying into a good family.

Robert didn’t miss the fact that Hera wasn’t too happy about the new arrangement, but it didn’t matter. He didn’t want his daughter paying the price for his mistakes.

“So, does that mean I can’t wear my orange tennis shoes?” Madeline asked realizing what they were talking about.

Michela answered, “Save it for a real wedding, Madeline.”

Malcolm asked smartly, “Were you trying to marry that dude that came here yesterday?”

“It was in the works at one time, Malcolm, but he called it off.”

“He’s a smart young man.” Robert commented with satisfaction.

Hera wanted to speak up and bring up the good points of getting married to Jacob, but she held her tongue. She knew her voice on the matter would be unpopular.

“Kevin kind of ran him off, Dad.” Michela revealed.

“Good ole’ Kevin, he knows the deal.” Robert chuckled.

Michela and Hera suddenly realized he didn’t know Kevin was dead. Hera cleared her throat and told Robert. He was shocked by the news.

Robert asked, “How did it happen?”

Michela answered softly, “I found him when I went over to his apartment last night.”

He stood and went to his daughter. He asked with concern, “You found him?”

“Yeah,” she said with a hurtful smile.

“You should have left the apartment. Someone could have been in there. You weren’t bothered, were you?”

“No, Dad, I was fine. No one was in the apartment from what I could tell.”

“Police know who’s responsible?”

“I’m not sure, but they did question me.”

“Robert, I told her not to speak to the police.” Hera added.

He heard Hera’s statement, but he didn’t think there was no harm in Michela talking to the police. He asked, “What did they say to you?”

Michela revealed Detective Miller and Detective Harold were the ones she spoke to.
