Chapter 26. Hit Hard

Tony arrived just after 6 am and Jack was already waiting for him. He waited outside away from the house so he didn't wake the girls up.

“Hey Tony thanks for picking me up, we should get there pretty fast, leaving this early. So how well do you know Stevens? I know who he is, but that's about it.” Jack said.

“I know him a bit and he's a nice guy, I just hope that he's not involved in any of this.”

“I hope not for his sake.”

“How are your ribs and arm feeling?”

“My arm is actually fine, but the ribs are still a bit sore. I'm feeling a lot better than two days ago, but I'm still on the painkillers.”

“I'm sure they'll hurt for a few more days yet.”

They drove to Heathrow and waited at the gate for Stevens.

“It says that his plane landed early so he should be coming through any minute,” Tony said.

They waited another ten minutes and then Jack saw him.

“There he is.”

Stevens saw them and walked over.

“Are you guys my welcome home committee?” He smiled.

“Yeah, sort of. How was the flight?” Tony asked him.

“Kinda bumpy, I had trouble sleeping.”

“I hate that,” Jack said.

They started to walk back to their car.

“I heard the guys had trouble finding you?” Tony said.

“Yeah, for some reason they had the wrong address. The next thing I know there's five agents in swat gear surrounding my dad’s house. We don't have a phone up there, we don’t even have a TV or a Radio either, my dad owns the place and that's the way he likes it. He says once we're there, time stops and he doesn't want to be disturbed. To be honest, he went up there to die.”

“I'm sorry about your dad. I hope the swat team didn't scare the kids.”

“No, it was a shock though. I left the family there with my mom and dad then came back with the agents and got the first plane out.”

They got back to the car and Tony began to drive while Jack sat in the front passenger seat and Stevens sat in the back. Jack turned to him.

“We're here to ask you some questions. They'll do a full de-briefing when you get in, but we wanted to speak to you first.”

“OK, what do you want to know?”

”What do you know about Markham and Goldberg and their involvement with Operation Corea?”

“I'm not sure I can talk to you guys about that.”

“You're gonna have to, either now or when we get back.”

“I have to be careful because those guys are both dead and I was working with them, it's delicate.”

“Were you guys smuggling drugs on Pan Am planes?” Tony asked him.

“Us! No of course not. Markham and Goldberg were on their way back to blow the whistle on who was responsible for that, as far as I know. Operation Corea was an investigation into rogue CIA agents. They made sure that shipments of heroin got through security without anyone searching them. I was doing the grunt work, so I’m not the expert.
