And over those first three months since boarding the bullet train, Jake kept moving, from the moment he woke at six AM until falling asleep at his Beauty’s side each night, waking each morning at 4:00 to walk home and fall asleep somewhere near the girls’ rooms. He and Odette went running nearly every day, and he finished his first 5K the week before that first performance in Ontario. He kept on running, a few local 5Ks and his weekly long run on Monday nights when the streets were bare and quiet, affording him the peace he needed for those endorphins to drive him forward, surfacing lost memories. Bella was getting the best treatment ever as Jake had consulted with Bobby, his physical therapist friend from Damien, as well as some of the occupational therapists that were contracted to work with Abigail and many of her classmates, as to treatment routines Jake could do right there on site at the Rehab unit. He and the girls took her swimming, they danced for her to all her favorite songs, and though Bella could not move willfully, they were sure to move every part of her daily. Jake particularly massaged her back, neck, and scalp as he sang to her or while Odette read aloud. Jake lost all sorts of weight, so he darted up those stairs to the school of Theology in just a few strides. He met briefly with a trainer, who was amazed at both his determination and knowledge of fitness basics. He witnessed in Jake a hidden arsenal of passion, a force of energy that was pent up for years, breaking through and springing forth to life. Once Jake was in a routine of working out again — mostly using his own body as resistance with push-ups, dips, and chin-ups — he continued daily on his own. Odette, as she had determined the day they first went for a jog, shaved off his beard and took him for a haircut. Jake recalled his Dad, after treatment, and how Henry said his own head looked as if his neck had blown a bubble. Jake decided to take all his hair off as well, though he would keep his eyebrows, and Odette couldn’t wait for the sun to do its work on Jake’s head as it hadn’t seen the light of day in ages. JC Penny had a sale on jeans, so Jake stocked up on three new pairs of 550s, the perfect shade of blue, size 34/32, a size he hadn’t worn since Japan, and they still had the room he needed to feel the freedom jeans should afford a man. Odette placed his glasses in the curio cabinet next to the sofa Abby perched upon to see the world each morning.
