John is a master of irony and paradox throughout his writings. As Revelation 7 ends, it offers another striking example of paradox when the Lamb is also designated as the shepherd of the redeemed (Rev. 7:17). This picks up on John’s Gospel, where Jesus is both “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29) and the “good shepherd [who] lays down his life for the sheep” (John 10:11). You can see similar examples of John’s use of irony in Revelation 5:5–6, where the lion is a lamb.

The Seventh Seal: Silence

in Heaven (8:1–5)

Revelation 8 begins with the opening of the seventh seal. When the Lamb opens it, there’s silence in heaven for half an hour. But the drama and suspense quickly rebuild when “the seven angels who stand before God” (Rev.

8:2) receive seven trumpets. Something big is about to go down. Before you hit the fast forward button and hurry to find out what it is, pause and reflect on this delay. What does it signify? Angelic adoration ceases, and silence envelops the command center of the universe.
