Thrower was sitting outside at one of the tables, a bandage on the back of his head. He had his elbows on the table and his hands pressed against his forehead. A few seconds later, Ortiz came around through the side gate with the other guard. Thrower looked over at him, pleased to see that he wasn’t killed, though it looked like he was sporting a bad end of it, too. The guard was also holding his head. Ortiz brought him over to the table, the guard sitting across from Thrower.

“I am sorry,” Pedro said.

Thrower flicked his hand in the air as he sat back. He wasn’t in any position to talk.

“I failed. There is no excuse for my actions.”

“You’re not the only one,” Thrower said.

Pedro looked around. “What about Fernando?”

Thrower squinted, not even giving the second guard much thought until now. It was a good question, though. Where was Fernando? Why didn’t he put up any effort to stop the kidnapping? He would have been closer than either Thrower or Pedro, considering they were both out front by the gate. But Thrower hadn’t seen him at all during this whole situation.

“Manuel,” Thrower said. “Where is Fernando?”

Ortiz looked perplexed as well, as he threw his arms out. “I don’t know. I haven’t seen him.”

“You don’t think that’s strange?”

“I don’t know. I assumed you had him doing something.”

Thrower shook his head. “He shouldn’t be doing anything but standing guard.”

Ortiz put his finger in the air as he started to back away. “Let me go check.”

“How’d they get you?” Thrower asked his partner.

Pedro shook his head, still not believing what had happened. “I was sitting there in my chair. And then I started to hear noises.” He waved his hand in the air to illustrate how small they were. “Nothing big. Just little noises. It sounded like someone brushing up against the leaves and bushes. Maybe an animal or something. Since nothing else was going on, I decided to go have a look. I get out there, and pow, I immediately feel something come down on the back of my head. I must have passed out because I don’t remember anything that happened after that until Mr. Ortiz helped me.”

Thrower nodded. “Yeah. I came out to look for you and wound up with the same fate.”

“What are we going to do?”

“We gotta get that kid back, that’s what.”

“But how? We don’t even know who these people are or where they are.”

“We have to find out,” Thrower said.

They sat there for a few more minutes, talking about everything that had gone wrong over the last hour. Then Ortiz came outside, his arm around Angelina’s shoulder. They walked over to the table. Once they got closer, Angelina broke free of him and ran over to Thrower. She put her hands on his arms.

“We have to get Rosa back! Please, we have to get her back!”

Thrower stood up and put his arms around her. He knew she was hurting. “We’ll get her back. I promise you, we’ll get her back.
