Katy was reading intently when we came around to the front again. She shot her tentative smile my way.

“Well, I guess we should hit the road,” Mason said. Katy obediently folded her book and tucked it into her backpack.

“Kiddo, you need to use the bathroom?”

Embarrassed, Katy shook her head.

“Well, I do.” Mason headed to the house.

Katy and I stood there, uncertain of each other.

“We have to get together soon,” I told her. “All of us. It’s been too long!”

She nodded, that tight quick little nod. Very quietly, she said, “Are you going to help my dad? So he’s not so sad? He said you would help him by talking to him.”

“Your father is a dear friend. We had a great talk, and I think he feels better.”

I wasn’t sure how much had been said in Katy’s hearing and didn’t want to ask a question that would tell her more than her parents had.

“Because he’s been gone so much,” she said to the ground. “He’s been out at the camp all the time. Mom’s, like, mad at him and she misses him. And she worries about him.”

“He’ll be back, don’t worry.” I kissed her on the top of her head again. When I put my arm around her shoulders, I was gratified that she leaned in against me. A child hungry for assurances.

Mason appeared at the cabin door. Katy put on her helmet, Mason double-checked her strap, put on his own. He struck me as more composed as he straddled the bike and then turned to help her climb onto the seat behind him.

“Hold on tight,” he ordered. “Remember, always lean with me, not against, right?”

“I will.”

“Thank you, Celine. Tell Conn I’ll give him a call. I’ll think about the Laughlin thing.”

I nodded and he fired up the bike. He put it into gear and eased it forward and out the driveway, Katy’s arms tight and helmet firmly against his broad back.
